A week at Baxter State Park – September 13-19, 2008 - PART TWO

Day Four – Pogy Pond to Russell Pond – Caverly Lookout, Grand Falls, Turner Deadwater Everyone who assured me that I would see tons of moose on this trip I have to say I managed to spend a week at Baxter and I did not see one. On this morning, I heard a bunch of crashing about in the woods...

A week at Baxter State Park – September 13-19, 2008 - PART ONE

The place I have never managed to get to…Baxter State Park has finally been visited. About a year ago Eric (Tuco), Paul (Rols) and Larry (LarryD) began discussing the possibility of getting a good chunk of time off to head up way north to BSP. After talking about a lot of things we decided that...

    Birthday party question

They certainly have bread pans as they are always making those sort of things - most cake recipes can be baked in a variety of pans/shapes/sizes. It may not be the shape you want, but you probably could get by with a loaf pan if you had to - possibly go with a lower temperature and cook longer -...

    What day is today?

It is Thursday. I never can forget - doesn't matter what day it is. I always think of an old acquaintance of mine who lost his dad that day (and if his mom did not change her travel plans the night before...) I had the pleasure (NOT) :( of explaining 9/11 to a five year old last night.

    Music while hiking

You used the word "buttress" - which returns the thread to being mountain/hiking related - nice work! :D

    Music while hiking

Bravo! Could not agree more - but I guess to each their own. Hell, why stop there - small tvs, video games, bring it all - I just do not see the point - I like to get away from all of that. Last year somewhere near the Brookside and the Watson Path I heard music (was hiking with Marty if memory...

In need of therapy? Try Isolation

Some people go to therapy - some of us hike - it has the same effect. Clears the mind, stress relief, get out of a society for a little while anyways. Nice job - I may have to work on going faster or you will be soloing all the time! Nice pictures - :(

    Hiker Dies on Haystack Mtn.

You and mtnma also showed your true colors as part of the team that helped - your assistance meant a ton to Marty and Jason and it means a lot to me as a hiker to know there is a community of people who do whatever it takes when an emergency or tragedy occurs. Also - LarryD from here at VFTT...

    Showers near Baxter State Park

Can anyone lead me towards a place where showers can be had when leaving Baxter State Park? After a week in the back country I think this may be a good plan for the ride home... Alternatively, a place with a pressure washer may work as well! Also, a recommendation for a good place to eat...

    Hiker Dies on Haystack Mtn.

What a weekend - Ray was a friend of mine that I met through his major hiking partner, Marty. The few hikes in the White Mountains, and a few more locally were always great times with a special man. People often say things like that, but if you ever got to hike with Ray you would know what I...

Volcanic sunset, Hancock Notch, freindly fox, Captain sighting?

I have finally figured it out - forestgnome takes pictures of the pictures in coffee table books from national parks and forests - that must be how he does it - seriously, it could not be that, because those pics are not as good! Thank you again for posting such wonderful pictures! :)

    Hiking in the rain?

I think at one point most of my hikes were in the rain - post 48 I am a bit more selective. I find it very difficult to get out of the car and start a hike in a downpour - that being said - it is not too much of a problem for me if it starts raining after I am underway.

One of the eastern most WMNF campgrounds on the Kanc (I think Jigger Johnson) has decent coin op showers....

One down 48 to go - Aaron gets his first 48 - September 2, 2008

I so hear both of you - I remember looking at books and maps when I was a kid and wanting to explore etc - no sour grapes here, but I really wished I was exposed to hiking a lot sooner in life than I was - I may have been able to avoid my 20s!
