restoring water repellancy to coated nylon?

In that case there's always the LL Bean Satisfaction Guarantee. They replaced a no-longer-waterproof GoreTex jacket for me without questions. Maybe just ask if they can replace the fly? My guess is they'll tell you to go pick out a new tent.

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

Thank you for this. Just because you grant an easement doesn't mean the public now owns it. $1.4 million is a cheap way to ensure this land does not become another housing or condo development. The "Battle of Ossipee" could drag on for many years, but the collateral damage is being done today...

our 48 finish now on SUNDAY (30th)

I believe that is Sage. And kids must have a "thing" for bare feet. My two (ages 7 and 3) are always running around and playing sans shoes and socks. Even on the hot driveway. Nice photos all, and I've said it elsewhere, but for the record.... Congratulations Alex!

Why are there more bee and wasp stings this summer?

My 3 y/o daughter got stung last week (2 quick strikes) while shucking corn with my wife on the back steps, and I had a few pestering me at work the other day out of the blue. Both cases I felt were odd, since the only time I see them is when I (or the kids) disturb a hive. Kind of comforting...

Do you take painkillers, ibuprofen, etc. when hiking?

I got the same explanation from my doc when I told her the pain in my hands (now thought to be tendonitits, x-rays negative for arthritis) didn't go away with a dose or two of Ibuprofen. She told me to take it religiously for 4-6 weeks and report back. It did work, but I don't take it...

Headache while hiking. If not dehydration, then what?

Reading this statement, my first guess would be a lack of electrolytes. I sweat a lot too, more so now than 10 years ago, and find my old stand-by by of just water doesn't cut it anymore for hikes longer than 5 or 6 miles. But it may also be time for a check-up. I don't have a whole lot of...

Mom Made Me Do It (Lafayette: 20-Aug-2009)

Wow, they look great for their age! And Kentucky would be my second retirement choice (behind the Whites) - beautiful country down there. Nice pics and trip report. I'm am suffering from a serious bout of mountain fever. I need to find a job where I work winters and have summer off, that...

    Car Camping near the Beach

I'll second that. Great beach and the water depth increases VERY gradually. IIRC, you can see Chocorua from the beach. (This was 20 years ago, so it may be a figment of my imagination). Not sure on their pet policy though. I'm with Chip... I'd leave the pup home for this one, and if all...

Hiking up Mt. Madison on NHPTV

I saw it a few months ago (or was it last winter?) and it wasn't bad. About the same as all of the Windows To The Wild episodes - mostly a video picture show with some huffing and puffing commentary by Willem. I think my wife finds them a little dry, so I TiVo them and watch them early on...

"Glamping" - Enticing new campers into the woods

What I find funny (and a little odd) is all of the anti-technology-in-the-woods sentiments in this thread, yet Mats Roing's real-time tracking data seems to have piqued lots of interest. I don't think the members following his track are the same ones eschewing the techie-gear in the back...

Man Calls Helicopter for Injured Thumb

No. Everything is [b]bigger[/i] in Texas, including the idiots! And to think these people are loose in everyday society. Stupid warning labels are for guys like him......

    NH 48 Direttissima North to South 8/13 - 8/23

Making their way along Rt. 2 right now, about a half mile from Jefferson notch Rd. Keep the hammer down M&M, and good luck!

    Round laces or flat?

^^^^^^^^^^ That is foul! Even most through-hikers don't smell that bad. Props to you for not vomiting during application! :D I'll opt for the less-nauseating SnoSeal on my boots. Back on topic: Like DougPaul, I like the laces that came on my Merrils. They are round, but always stay tied...

    Flags on the 48 - 2009 - 09/12/2009

Thanks to you and your hubby's cancelled trip! I was thinking of grabbing this one, but like Chip I couldn't commit until early September (if at all). Thanks again for making sure all of these peaks are covered again.

Etiquette of "Please take my picture"

Same here. We once offered to e-mail photos (from a non-hiking event, a kids meet&greet with the Easter Bunny) and you would have thought we offered them gold. We've also been offered to have our group photo taken many times so that one parent isn't absent from the shot, though not once at...

    Leo home at last

Congratulation Pat and Audrey! Hopefully we can get to meet Leo some day soon. Alyson loves puppies!

    Baby on their backs

I think this is the number one factor to consider when you are thinking of putting a baby into a carrier for a hike. How many times have you fallen, or even tripped? How's your balance, and can you keep your balance if the load shifts suddenly? Personally, I am not a faller. I never have had...

    How fast do you ascend?

I selected 1000'-1500' per hour, which is my usual rate in my current state of fitness. "Back in the day" when I was in better hiking shape I could go well above that for a 1-2 hour stint, regularly climbing the 2miles and 1800 or so feet from the Monadnock State park HQ to the summit via the...

RIP Nin (Mount Washington Obs Cat)

That's a shame, but he lived a long and full life. I can only hope my cats live that long.

Saving Digital Photo files for long-term

We recently had this come up at work where we wanted to access some old info from the previous automation system. The data was stored on tape backup, but not 1 computer in the company still had a tape drive. Which reminds me, I have a few zip disks to convert to newer media. Check your...
