    Gentlemen thieves?

That's probably the most expensive item most of us have in/on their vehicles. Leaving the doors unlocked sometimes works, but IIRC someone on this board recently had their window smashed even though the doors were unlocked and there was nothing of value in the car, visible or hidden. I guess...

    Wilderness Thoughts

Despite being in a terrible rush to start the saws and demolish the bridge. I can see not wanting to move the mess until the ground is frozen and/or snow covered, but if the debris is still littering the area when the snow melts in 2011 I think the Pemi Ranger district should "fine itself" by...

    EMS is hiring in Peterborough

I just received an e-mail from EMS stating they are hiring seasonal customer service and warehouse employees at their Peterborough location. They are holding a job fair this weekend at the following times: Thursday, October 7: 4:30pm - 8:00pm Friday, October 8: 8:30am - 8:00pm Saturday...

    Anybody wanna match this climb?

Yes, towers like those are free-climbed. A college buddy of mine climbed a big one once in the mid-west. Not as tall as that one, but probably somewhere near a 1000 feet. He said he had "lunch" (probably a small, high energy snack) somewhere during the climb so that he would have the energy...

Save the date: Saturday November 6, Pat and Audrey's potluck

And pounding them he is. Between that and road biking, his dance card has been pretty full. According to him: "This retirement thing is great! Every day is a Saturday!" As usual, we'll try to make it... And as usual, one of the kids will probably come down with something a few days prior. :)

New record for the Rock Pile

I noticed that watching Sprongl's run on the auto road website. Just the difference in the paddle-shifter gearbox would be enough to shave that much time off of the record. Nothing against Pastrana as he IS certifiably nuts and a heck of a dirt bike racer (and now auto racer), but I have a...

New record for the Rock Pile

NICE, right on my birthday! I'll have to put that one on the calendar. Both cars were AWD (Sprongl did his run in an Audi Quattro) but I imagine suspension technology and AWD systems in general have come a long way in that last 12 years.

New record for the Rock Pile

I'd give it a shot, in someone else's pickup! :D I took mine to the top the traditional way and can imagine I'd be fighting (and likely losing) against a lot of tail-wag especially on the upper sections. That's a dang impressive time, but I'd like to see Sprongl do it in the same "specially...

    2010 Fall Foliage thread

Maybe.... Just got back from the yearly trip to our favorite local apple orchard (in north central Mass) and the owners said they were at least a week ahead of "schedule" on the early varieties. We went in thinking we might have to search for ripe ones, but the trees were loaded with stuff...

    socks , socks , socks

Darn Tough for me as well. I used to use the SmartWool hikes exclusively and have a pair of Alpaca wool socks but the Darn Tough ones work the best for my sweaty feet. I will admit they are a little snug, but I like them that way. <shameless plug> For those in or around central Mass, there's...

    Help/advice - "hiker car" needed??

Surprisingly capable. During the 2008 ice storm, it got me into "ground zero" in the town of Ashby, MA (just south of Windblown) and back without much worry. You have to drive it carefully in such conditions, but it handled snow and ice (with all-season tires) much better than my low-clearance...

    Help/advice - "hiker car" needed??

Where I work, 95% of the company-provided pickups are Fords. We're in the road construction business and haul gear, equipment, and crew all over New England. It's routine for these trucks to run 250,000+ miles before they get pulled off the road. They just pulled me out of my 2005 F-150 at...

a nice walk with a bull moose

+1 But look at it this way - you're going out "on top" instead of Brett Farve-ing your career in moose photography.

    Mt. Monadnock, 7/18/2010

Now that you mention it - we ran into a group of 4 people descending from the summit along the Pumpelly in the vicinity of the Red Spot. They were picking some blueberries and we commented that they were sure to find more further down (we passed several patches). They asked if we wanted to...

Monadnock - Spruce Link is now White Cross

I had heard it was re-signed / re-routed about 6 months ago, and Sunday wondered why when we hiked the White Dot. Thanks for the explanation as to why this was done.

First 4' ker: Mount Osceola for Conor, Tucker and Taylor

Way to go Conor! Love to read the stories of little hikers - makes me wish I didn't have such a summer-oriented profession so that I could have some free time to do hikes like these with my kids.
