Car break ins on Zealand Road

No one would touch it if it's mounted on a tall enough pole. Some thieves are deterred by the mere sight of one (ie dummy cameras). Something is better than what exists now, which is a once-in-a-while patrol.

Car break ins on Zealand Road

And in an age where there seems to be a security cam on every street corner, I'm starting to wonder why one has not been put in the lots in question. After the initial cost for the equipment it's pretty much free patrolling. And before someone chimes in with the "but who's going to pay for...

    Deet Ate My GPS!!!

I've gone through 2 bottles of Bens 100 in the last ten years, most of it sprayed, on my skin and I'm still walking. Something's going to "get" me anyway and I would rather it not be Lyme disease. FWIW, it lasts all day long for me when used in that concentration. While doing roadwork in...

    Degenerative Disc Disease

I was going to post this on Rocks, but being the first I was sure it was applicable. But what the heck: Max has/had "slipped disc" problems since before I was born from a skiing accident (IIRC) so it wouldn't surprise me if you have to curtail that activity or give it up altogether. I know he...

    Hiking Toward Employment

Reading this thread, all I can think of is: Barney Stinson's Video Resume I don't know as if I would be ballsy enough to do that. I think it would be akin to me referencing my experience coaching street hockey to a bunch of 7-9 year-olds. Sure, one can draw parallels with the organizational...

    Berkshires...Things to Do

Just a minor clarification to Brian's post re: Yankee Candle. It's about 20 minutes north of North Hampton in Deerfield just off of I-91, about 5 miles south of Rt. 2. About a half mile to the North on Rt. 5 is the Magic Wings butterfly conservatory. IMO it's a little pricey to get in, but...

Longest trails hike to a NH4

Doh! I did but failed to notice the "not over another 4000-footer rule". Using the Map Adventures map and excel, I came up with a winding route starting at Nancy Pond, looping over Carrigain, up Shoal pond, over Willey/Field/Tom and Avalon. A-Z trail to Ethan Pond Trail to Thoreau Falls...

    Proposed Mt. Greylock Resort

Sounds like a decent idea to me. Keep some of those NH-bound tourism dollar in my home state. And it's not another summit building but a very close model of the Great Glen Outdoor Center. Another campground, more trails, nordic ski center and an outdoor music venue are a nice trade-off for a...

    Owl's head?

:D It's about time! It makes me cringe when I hear talk of hacking/blazing new routes especially when we're all supposed to be practicing "Leave No Trace". This concession will go a long way to establishing a (mostly) singular route to the true summit for the purists that feel the need to be...

    Owl's head?

Not their fault totally. I'll repost my response on another hiking forum to this "Wilderness" fiasco: I'll save my "conspiracy theories" on the true motives of the USFS, but IMO it's not to protect the Wilderness based on what I see happening. I see complaints on this forum (and others)...

    Mt. Wachusett, Various trails, 5-30-2010

Date of Hike: 5-30-2010 Trail Conditions: Trails lower on the mountain were a bit damp with a few slick rocks and roots from the showers the previous evening. Bicentennial, High Meadow, Jack Frost, Mountain House (upper end) and Loop trails all in fine shape. Special Equipment Required: Bug...

Three Slackers Summit Greylock, May 26, 2010

Looks a little less crowded than the trip we took up on Columbus Day weekend where we waited almost a half hour just to park! Nice photos as usual Trish!

EMS not standing behind their products

Are we to blame, or are the stores/manufacturers to blame? I didn't ask them to provide a 100% satisfaction guarantee. And if they offer said guarantee, I'm not supposed to take advantage of it when the need arises? And I'm supposed to "spread the love" and buy items from places that don't...

Ken Cuddeback Trail in Amherst closed due to coyote attacks

I saw one crossing route 2 in broad daylight that I though was a German Shepherd at first until I got closer - definitely coyote but boy was it big! Lots around in my work location just north of Amherst - see LOTS of tracks in the area of the Pocumtuck Ridge Trail just before it crosses the river.

EMS not standing behind their products

That's terrible. I'd give a phone call to the corporate office in Peterborough just for giggles and remind them there are a plethora of options when it comes to purchasing outdoor gear, and both REI and LL Bean offer superior service (IMO). Even if you vow never to shop there again (and I...

How to leave bike at trailheads?

I've ridden from Cannon down to Lincoln as part of a bike ride and can say the bike path is not well-suited for going from A to B. The twisty turns and lots of ups and downs meant a lot of braking and shifting. Definitely a sight seeing path. Maybe you won't find it that bad, but at the end...

Quick reality test - Bike ride from 19 Mile Brook Trail Head to Lot at Glen Ellis?

I've ridden 16 from Pinkham to Gorham and back, and IIRC it's easier going from Pinkham to 19 mile. Going in the other direction the climb is more or less relentless until you reach the Wildcat parking lot. Not a hard climb (the section North of the auto road can be a grind) but it's still...

    Canine Four Thousand Footer Awards

Although a quick search reveals sightings on in the Berkshires and the CT River Valley, I seem to recall a sighting in Ashby or Ashburnham, MA sometime back in the 80s. Maybe it couldn't be confirmed, but some of the ledgy areas make for wonderful snake habitat so I don't doubt they could be...

Mama moose and calf in Pinkham Notch

Considering how close he gets to take such wonderful photos and the general relationship he seems to have with Moose - it would not surprise me if he was able to. :D Another fine photo Forestgnome!

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

I used to be a volunteer EMT for the town rescue squad and I quit when a rift developed inter-squad over the decision to go from 100% volunteer to paid volunteers. We were a lot like F&G - no funding from the town, operating budget came from donations and a 1-day-per-year door-to-door pledge...
