    Lake Champlain Bridge closed

Really cool no matter which way it's viewed. But I still get excited by rock-shots at the quarry....

    AMC Executive Director pay

I'd carry propane bottles any day over that! I inspect septic tanks on the side and it's not a job for those with sensitive noses (and stomachs). So I give Pat two HUGE thumbs up for that one! B)

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

I agree with Maddy on this one. It's all well and good to say you'd rather fend for yourself, and as long as I have the ability to walk on my own two feet I would hate to be the subject of a search if I was delayed in my return. But I would feel very thankful someone is looking for me after...

    AMC Executive Director pay

I was thinking about this too. Many moons ago, my dad helped the caretaker at Nauman tentsite carry an empty propane bottle up to the hut and I was a little amazed at the number of bottles in storage - there were at least a dozen. The helicopter bill to supply the huts and other backcountry...

    AMC Executive Director pay

Don't be fooled, even businesses that pay taxes pay only a fraction of what you and I do on their profits due to various tax rules and loopholes. Warren Buffet admitted that he pays less in federal taxes than his personal secretary, and the guy just bought a railroad.

    Snow on the Kanc

I didn't take it that way, and I'm sorry if my post came across with a similar tone. I just hate getting taken for a ride while trying to "be green". It's the same story with LED lights. I know the light itself costs a bit more, but 5x more per set? ($2 vs. $10, regular prices) Based on my...

    Snow on the Kanc

I would LOVE to do this.... But last night's price at the local Home Depot was $109.95!!!! and I refuse to pay that much. Granted your can use it twice, once in the pot, and once again a few years later when you cut it down, but at those prices it's still costs more compared to the $35 I paid...

    Dog Booties and Winter Hiking

Mushers wax seems to help a little. Boots are your best bet, and it took several tries before I could get all four on the husky. She fought me hard each time, once giving me a black eye by rearing up as I was standing over her trying to fasten the bootie. The back of a dog's head is REALLY...

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Sounds a lot like the mess we had almost exactly 1 year ago. I hope we don't get a repeat! And after last year's icing event, anything upslope was near impossible to get to! :)

    NH RSA 265:95 'Sno go

'Bout time. I'm tired of driving behind lazy-arse folks who don't clear that "sail" off of their roof and then deposit it, in whole or parts, upon my hood and windshield at highway speeds. I wish they would require it of large box-type trucks, but there's a safety concern for the truck drivers...

    Avalon (Plan B), December 6, 2009

I've been there (both as a kid and as an adult)... Some days you're just not feeling it and it's great that she knows the difference between enjoying the hike, and just doing it to do it. And now she knows the day can be still be "successful" when plans are altered.

Anyone Know What This Object Might Be?

I was going to mention this as well. My property and that of my two neighbors was once owned by the local "scrap man / trash hauler" and you never know what you'll find when you dig down more than 8" or so.

Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

There's a whole bunch of empty calories in the "cheer". Find away to avoid those and it will get easier. I'm not a drinker but love plain old Egg Nog during the holidays which is just as bad for the waistline, if not more so. I don't dare hop on the scale today. I ate waaaaay too much...

Lincoln Woods Stroll or Tobit Returns to the Woods

I get the shin splints (but no knee pain) if I run even a quarter mile in the wrong shoes. Might be worth mentioning it to your orthopedist at least.

Lincoln Woods Stroll or Tobit Returns to the Woods

You said it! My feet won't tolerate Superfeet. And like DougPaul, I found what worked best after having a set of orthotics made for me when I was younger. Now I can get by with Dr. Scholls 3/4 length arch supports, either with or without the gels under the heel as they don't make a whole lot...

    Next adventure

Off the top of my head: Tom, Willey, Field The Hancocks The Tripyramids The Osceolas Cabot and Waumbek (drive between) The Twins and Galehead Eisenhower, Pierce, Jackson (all in one if you can get a ride between trailheads, or in parts) .... plus all those already mentioned. With the...

    Printing Photos

The 1 hour printing at places like Walgreens and Walmart have come a long way, IMO. We haven't had anything printed larger than 5x7, but the quality was good enough for me to dismiss the thought of replacing our 10 year old HP photo printer and just have them printed by someone else. We just...

    Lake Champlain Bridge closed

Kind of. Considering he was employing "best practices" of the time and the bridge technically outlived it's anticipated service life, albeit with much repair work along the way, I would say he did a satisfactory job on the design, but no more than that. One would think a "good' engineer is a...

    Lake Champlain Bridge closed

First, it sounds like someone didn't fully appreciate the forces generated by frozen water. And I buy your hypothesis on the bearings. Especially when initial repairs were required only 15 years into its service life, and have been a going concern ever since. And as Craig mentioned there...

"The Wayback Machine" - surf the web like it's 1999

I do, I do! Circa 1996, sophomore year at college. Back when you could tell someone "Just e-mail me" and most of them would just give you a blank stare. See it here: http://web.archive.org/web/19990203103806/www.lexicomm.com/whites/
