    Wapack S to N 9/24/11

Regarding FKT on the wapack: There actually is an annual race on the whole wapack trail http://wapacktrailrace.com/ The winner of the one way race did it in about 3:20! I have no idea what the true FKT is. There is also a wapack and back race 50 miler version at this race.

Garfield Ridge tent site - shelter being replaced

I too was thinking of staying there this weekend. I called the AMC today and they said that they still need to put the shingles on the roof so they are "discouraging people from staying in the shelter unless there is an emergency." I believe there is a caretaker there this weekend, so that...

Flown from the highest fire tower in New England on 9/11/11

Nice succinct report to capture the spirit of the FOT48 event and day. The flags lining signal ridge look great!

    FOT48: West Bond

It was great to join in on this hike. Great group and stellar way to remember the day and honor those lost that day. Tim, thanks for sharing the video of the military chopper flyover, that indeed was a special moment and call to remember those who have served and sacrafice to keep us safe...

Hornet Nest on Thoreau Falls Trail

The best practice if you are allergic or paranoid about being allergic (other than not being in the backcountry until below freezing) would be to carry both benadryl (preferably a quick dissolve version instead of regular tablets) and 2 epi pens. If stung, take benadryl immediately, even...

Hornet Nest on Thoreau Falls Trail

Thanks for posting this. I know many hikers who are actually allergic and have family that are. Many wasps protect their nests so if there is one literally on trail it is a hazard worth noting. A sting in the backcountry for those allergic would be disasterous.

    Cathedral Trail on Katahdin Question

Thanks for all of the responses. Great to get first hand knowledge on trails like this. I appreciate it! It strikes me too that assessing exposure and "how tough" a trail like this will always vary person to person. Sounds then that perhaps that the Cathedral Trail then might be have more...

    Another Rescue - Mt Madison

Not me Hope my previous post wasn't unclear. I am not the John in the story. I just happen to notice a comment that clarified what happened to this other guy. But I am glad he is ok too!

Extended Southern Presi Traverse in the Clouds…Practice For Something Bigger?

Hikers on the slopes of Eisenhower Earlier this summer I had plans with a buddy to try the one day Presi Traverse. I figured after running a respectable sub 4 marathon this spring and getting more into trail running, this might be the summer to use that conditioning and do it. But my friend...

    Owl's Head

I had the same concerns about Owl's Head and finallly did it two weeks ago sticking to the trails to complete my 48 and my worries turned out to be baseless. Streams were easy in the dry midsummer conditions. The details in hikerbrians and lRiz's posts are spot on regarding finding the route...

    Another Rescue - Mt Madison

I noticed in the comments below the article the following: John did not fall for an eighth of a mile down the mountain. He fell at a point that was an eighth of a mile below the summit. He called out for help, and Larry and two EMTs on the trail responded with field treatment. He had a...

    Cathedral Trail on Katahdin Question

Hi All, I was hoping for some help from those on this board who have done the Cathedral Trail on Katahdin. I was hoping to climb that trail later this summer, but my friend who I am going with has a bit of a fear of heights, more specifically with things with great sense of exposure and not so...

    Belknap Range trail question

yes ticks! I hike in the belknaps regulary, and have picked up ticks going from the round pond trail to klem a week ago (the trail is often overgrown) and also whiteface/piper this. Be vigilant! Map is a great idea if going into the center part of the range, there are tons of confusing...

    Isolation via Glen Boulder?

I would agree that the Glen Boulder is an especially tedious descent. I went to Isolation that way and back, and found the section coming down between the boulder and the road to be one my least enjoyable descents in 100+ white mountain hikes in that its big rocks in the trail bed makes you...

Dead Moose around Chocorua: Big animal getting at it?

Thanks. That would seem the most likely explaination, especially if coyotes are capable of it. I did subsequently get in touch with a ranger about it, she didn't seem to indicate that it would be anything more than that. I hike solo often, and I guess the incident just reminded me that I am...

    Hybrid Moonlight/Sunlight Presi Traverse 6.17.11

Out of curiosity, was he wearing deet (or reapplying)? If so that is frightening! I usually swell up half a limb from one blackfly bite, so I would probably suffer a similar fate. Horrible bug aftermath aside, well done and great hike, must be especially surreal on a moonlit night up there.

Dead Moose around Chocorua: Big animal getting at it?

As noted in a trail conditions report, I encountered a dead moose on the Carter Ledge Trail on Mount Chocorua Sunday, June 19th. I only spent a minute or two checking it out, the smell motivated me to move on fast, so I just assumed it died of disease and then scavengers took it from there...
