Sherp, I'm disappointed in you. The color of the plates doesn't matter. Hey, with the new AG plates we have all kinds of colors. You just don't want to be "from away." :D

    Summer Gathering

Bearly Live is Bearly Live, and although it's a gathering, it's not The Gathering. That usually happens in mid-September, and planning hasn't started yet. We've taken some care to separate the musical gatherings from the VFTT Gatherings, so as not to exclude anyone who doesn't particularly feel...

Grafton Loop Trail (GLT) Backpack Trip - LONG

Thanks, Chomp. I've been thinking about the Loop for awhile, and I suppose I should do it someday since I've climbed Speck and the Baldpates more times than I can count. (Yeah, that means more than 3.) The details in your TR will be valuable for the rest of us who follow in your footsteps.

    Our Mistakes?

Oh yeah, how could I forget! Trying vapor barrier gloves in the early '80's, and coming down Bigelow drenched to the elbows on a pretty nice winter day. Duh.

    Darren's father passed away

My deepest sympathy to you both, and to your family. May you all find comfort in one another in the coming days and weeks.

Easy hikes for 3 year old - whites.

Gig, try the Sugarloafs off the Zealand Road. You'll be doing some carrying, but it won't wear out the old man. :D You'll also need to keep an eye on the young 'un on the ledges. Three year olds are just mobile enough--well, you know that already. The lower part of Falling Waters trail on...

    Funny caption?

Oh look, it's the Bill Buckner tunnel!

    Our Mistakes?

Yeah, I meant molefoam in my post, not moleskin. :o The foam really works much better.

    Our Mistakes?

For a hundred mile backpacking trip along the AT in Shenandoah Nat'l Park I decided to bring a new pair of boots--hey, those canvas Vietnam combat boots didn't require a break-in period because they were so flexible, right? I knew that because I had already used a pair for a couple years and had...

Common Hiking Related Injuries and Avoiding Them

Gee, MEB, is this what's known as an "overuse injury?" :D How're you doing on the Grid?

Team Dom Denali Attempt Day by Day

So far so . . . wow! Thanks Mats. It's great to have you all back. I suppose we should all thank that pilot for not letting you fly the plane!

Team Dom attempts Denali May 21 - June 10th

Congratulations Team Dom! Having hiked with some of you gives me, and many more folks here, some perspective on the challenge involved in climbing to the rooftop of North America. In the spirit of VFTT, I'm sure it was a long, great (and perhaps even strange :D ) trip. Thanks for getting back...

    Boston Beer Night, June 12

    Good, 'cause I can't make June 12th. :o

Team Dom attempts Denali May 21 - June 10th

Dear Ms. "Merely a Messenger" OK, so you didn't physically climb with them. Still, you were our connection to a team we know and care about very much. If you haven't figured it out yet, we all REALLY REALLY appreciate your keeping us in the loop. I think probably lots of us like to...

At least they're getting plenty of time to acclimatize! :D Good luck to the team and thanks for the updates, Chinooktrail.

    Biking to Baxter State Park

Keep in mind, too, that they're bigger than "normal" trucks. These are not public road vehicles, they're made to drive the private logging roads and to carry as much wood as feasible. They go fast because time is money.

Team Dom attempts Denali May 21 - June 10th

Go Team Dom! A great dedication from a great, dedicated group. Stay healthy and whole, and here's to your achieving both your goals: the summit AND the parking lot! Oh, and bring our bass player home safely, please?

    Survey markers on the trails

The nail in the ground IS the point used by the surveyor--the transit is set up over that point. dug is right about everything. Sometimes the traverse points are set quite far outside the property lines in order to get good sight lines to corners, etc. They're set in reference to known (i.e...

    Last Minute Portland Beer Night?
