Headache while hiking. If not dehydration, then what?

Don't listen to any of this stuff, Unstrung Harp! It's all hogwash. :D Your problem is one of two things: 1. Maybe you need to string that harp. They're designed to be strung, you know. But then again, maybe your words do glow with the gold of sunshine. 2. List stress. Trying too hard...

Tourists Feared Dead After Freak Acadia Wave

Sad. Rogue waves aren't all that rare, just unusual enough so that people think they're fine where they are, then . . . . Even on a pretty nice day you can get one every once in a while that comes way up beyond the average. I see lots of people standing on the rocks at Portland Head who...

    NH 48 Direttissima North to South 8/13 - 8/23

Wow, great work! What a trip. Oh, and sorry about drinking your beers yesterday, but you guys just weren't in the right place at the right time. :D

    Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer

I burn through Maine Atlases like firewood on a 40 below night! I use them so much that the covers come off and the pages get ragged--I've probably owned a dozen of them by now. In fact, it's about time for a new one so I'm glad they've just issued one. Will withhold judgment on the new "scheme"...

    NH 48 Direttissima North to South 8/13 - 8/23

MtnPa, Abster and I headed up Liberty Springs Trail today looking for our Shaker and Baker--no success. Pa went as far as Lincoln but didn't see them. Now I see on the tracker that they were (or at least Matts's iPhone was) ascending Flume around 7:30 p.m. . . . from the Lincoln Woods side...

Congratulations, ladies! Great job, and a wonderful place to count as #115. Now you'll have to go back when it's clear. Winter Bigelow trip, anyone?

    Fall Gathering 2009

Stan speaks wisely. There will always be some folks who can't make one date or another, but if we figure on a particular weekend for every year, then it's more likely we can make it happen for ourselves. Of course, a year is a L - O - N - G time ahead to plan for something! But isn't that why...

    Fall Gathering 2009

Like Mats said--and I voted for Eustis. :D I seem to remember we didn't have very good luck with VT.

When the heck is Bearly Live 2009?

As for Saturday night, just look at it this way: we're not posting under the thread title, "$25,000 fine assessed." Glad everyone had a good time in spite of the very polite but very insistent officials. I mean really, 10:00 p.m.??? We all had a good time playing Friday and Saturday, and...

    How fast do you ascend?

I just took a wild guess. A couple weeks ago it took Abster and me about 3 hours to climb a thousand feet, but that was in the 8.5 miles to 13 Falls. :D Distance counts.

When the heck is Bearly Live 2009?

If anyone coming to Bearly Live is a running fan, there's a big race on BL Saturday in Cape Elizabeth, about an hour from Sherpa's. It's a world class 10K, featuring runners from all over and usually won by someone from Kenya or Ethiopia. Wheelchair racers, too. It's called the "Beach to...

Exploring Tunnel Ravine on Moosilauke 7/23/09

Sounds like a pretty nice place! Makes me remember that I have to get back to the Moose when it's not spitting ice and blowing 60 mph! Thanks for the photos, Jason.

    ~2 day Maine Hike recommendations

Lots of great point-to-point hikes in ME, especially along the AT. Some involve mountains, some are just great woods walks, with ponds and streams. As for loops, Bigelow is a good one. You can go in on the Caribou Bog Road, camp and hike the Crockers and Redington or Sugarloaf, Abraham and...

    Stratton, ME?

I drove Rt. 2 from Gorham to Farmington last Saturday. Construction is pretty well done, and the road is fairly good to drive. On the other hand, it's not an interstate, so it's slow. So if you're coming from CT, definitely take I-95 to Rt. 27 (Augusta) to Farmington. All Maine back roads are a...
