Pierce Through Washington to Complete my Single Season Winter 48 - 2/16/2009

Congratulations, Larisa! Now remember, you can't ignore the rest of the northeast--plenty of mountains to climb, this winter and next.

Dead Calm on Dead President's Day: Washington via Ammo Trail & Crawford Path 2/16/09

Pumpkin, if you add an hour to your TR it could be mine! same times to all the landmarks, plus seeing the stationary anemometer and the amazing color contrasts. If the guy you met arriving (as you were leaving) was huffing and puffing and had a white beard and glasses, that was me. Yup, I...

    Winter 48 on the osceola's

Congratulations, Karen, nice work. I didn't realize you were that close to finishing. Sounds like the weather tried to mess things up but didn't succeed! Now the 67?

    Mountain Gender Poll & Thoughts

Ah, but "Katahdin in all ITS glory . . . " It is gorgeous, though, I agree with you there Roadtripper. ;)

W48 completion on the Bonds 1/24/09

Wow, way to go, Mats & Jeff! Sounds like with just a bit thinner air you could have been on some of the really high peaks. But . . . I think you had plenty of challenge right there on the Bonds this time. Excellent job getting across in those conditions--must have something to do with the...

Great photos, Darlene! But how did you take so many with the wind howling like that????

Bondcliff Backpack on the wild side 01-23-24-09

Thanks for the TR, Dave, it's a good one. Planning to do a similar trip later in the winter, and you provided some good info! Fun videos, too! My wife called in from the other room, "What's that noise???" "Oh, just wind."

    S#!*loaf & the Bigalows -- 1/17/09

Good job salvaging the day! Not bad views from the Bigelows, eh? So I wonder, is there any way to climb Sugarloaf from the ski area base during the winter? (daytime, that is; I figure they'd be even more worried if you were out there with the grooming machines) The lift tickets exempt ski...

    Bugs & Baxter State Park

Good point, Peakbagger. One year we had reservations at Russell for Memorial Day weekend (which we got by getting in line around 3 a.m. on January 2nd) but couldn't use them because there was so much snow on the trails they weren't open. :(

    after-hike hang-outs in the Whites

GH is also good because they're quick and open when you need them--like after an Owl's Head hike, around 10:30 p.m. :o

    Bugs & Baxter State Park

Early to mid-May you should be fine. In my experience they don't really start until after Memorial Day. Patriotic bugs we have up here, but they REALLY party on the 4th! :D

How do you guys do this???

I must have been napping when this thread ran! That is what I do, though . . . nap on the way home. Unlike Umsaskis, I prefer to do it at a rest area and stopped. :D Since just about every drive home from the Whites is between 2.5 and 3 hours, I start out with every good intention of...

VFTT Shirts - which design do you like?

I personally like orange for the shirt color, BUT: let's remember that it's Darren's logo, his trademark, and he has the absolute right to decide any and all of these details. Besides, I think it's time once again to recognize what he's given all of us by providing this site. Thanks, Darren...

    after-hike hang-outs in the Whites

Gorham: Mr. Pizza apres, but the funky place with the tin ceilings for breakfast; N. Conway: Moat Mountain, hands (not thumbs) down; Lincoln: I'm a new Common Man fan, but that may be in large part because we got to sit right in front of the fire; I like Woodstock Station, and the only problem...

    Multi-Day Adirondack Misadventures: (1/17-19/09)

Great tag team job on the Trip Report! Sounds like lots of fun. You can always rely on Arm to take you to good places and make sure you enjoy them.

So What's The Coldest You Ever Been Out In?

When I was in high school we often (2 - 3 times per winter) headed home from "hanging out" downtown when it was between -35 and -45 (in a river valley). Temperature, not wind chill. I've always considered wind chill as being something like "-40 and windy" or "-25 and really windy." :D

VFTT Shirts - which design do you like?

2 or 1. Don't know why, but I kinda like the frame. On 3, I think the logo is too big for that placement. Thanks for doing this.

Haven't been on VFTT for awhile, just saw your note today. I'm trying to kick butt on the W48 list, except for Prezzies' Day when I think I'm heading to the Brothers with Art (unfortunately that makes it a "Jealous wife--no girls" trip). :( But let me know when you had in mind, I might be...

Mt Madison & Madison Gulf Trail 1/10/09

What a day! You all on Madison, Steve and Tim doing the Prezzie traverse, the other 2 crews on Franconia Ridge . . . and me at sea level.:( Well, at least it was sunny here, too. Those pictures really tell the story, Darl. I love it up there when the snow looks like it was sprayed onto the...

    Lafayette & Lincoln via Skookumchuck

Well, I got the word-of-mouth TR on Sunday, but the photos are fantastic! (Jason, I couldn't look at yours without "joining" Snapfish.) I particularly like #5, the treetop lighting is perfect. Nice work!
