DEC Ranger's reply on reopened Santanoni trail

Last June 6th (2007), The OSI, who purchased the land, communicated directly to me, and issued -THIS- statement: They have not contacted me, or recinded this (at least not to me). Kris should know best however. I will re-contact them and find out.

    Define “Bushwhack”

"Navigating and traveling through untracked terrain" has always worked for me.

“Adirondack Loj Road may require toll”

Let's face it, if they charged a toll (tax), we'd all pay it, and complain about it the whole time. Considering Dunkin' Donuts whacks me for $3 bucks for cup a Joe in the morning, I suppose I could live with a bridge toll

Whiteface Auto Road - Does it count

Certainly could wait the before/after hours route but that kind of defeats the whole "meeting the family up top for a picnic lunch" idea. Again, you could "renegade it" and hope that you don't get caught if you're into that sorta thing (I'd recommend against it personally), but the I'd stay off...

Man, you guys will find anything to argue about, huh. :D

Whiteface Auto Road - Does it count

Leaving aside the question of if it counts for the 46er's (which I'm not qualified to answer), I'd only emphasize the following in strongly urging you against it. 1) As Tom & Skyclimber point out - If the road is open, it's not ALLOWED, and it's clearly marked at the gated entry point. That...

Winter 2008, three proud dames reached their 3rd W

Great job and a wonderful accomplishment for all of you. Strong in body, strong in mind, but strongest in determination. Well done. [/insert "tip of the cap" smiley]

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

Surprise, surprise........ Once again, I agree wholeheartedly with Cory (ColdRiverRun) again. Also, I wonder where Andy, an admitted winter hiking novice with limited experience, got such a deep knowledge base to draw from in order to make such good decisions once he got into a situation he...

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

Post Script ADKdremn was kind enough to add a detailed account over at. ADKHP. If you haven't already made up your mind about the situation, it might be worth the nice long read. If not for the lessons it teaches us about ourselves and the ordeal. Thanks Andy. Right on PB, peace and...

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

Personally, that would have made my decision right there. But that's me. As an aside, I NEVER HIKE IN WINTER or SUMMER, not prepared to spend an unforseen in the woods. In fact, that is my wife's "call the Rangers" time. The next AM. Most seasoned winter hikers I know (or hike with) are the same.

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

Man, that's all I gotta do to get a free peak, count me in. :D Totally kidding of course. It's nice to that we do agree the above.

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

In principal, I agree. It just doesn't always work like that on LIH's (I love that term). For instance, there was a third hiker in this party that got sick about 45 minutes into the 3-day venture. He stopped the group after a mile or so and said "he was heading back". Do the other two "abort"...

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

Yeah, I'd agree with that. If that's all you look after. Point being was, ultimately, you have to learn to be self reliant in the woods, both preparation wise and navigation wise. That way, you will be in the best possible position to "persevere" if things go askew and you find yourself alone...

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

Damn, at this point, you must probably be disappointed you don't a have a "kids, did I tell ya about the night your old man spent in the woods" story then :D . Seriously, as has been said. Lessons learned and moving forward, and to be honest, it really doesn't sound like you were in all that...

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

I don't care what you disagree with Marta. You, of all people even, a 46er correspondent even, should understand that, when you enter the wilderness, you do so as an individual, and for yourself., responsible primarily for your own survival. We group together on climbs, on internet forums, or...

Flowed Land rescue this past weekend

Any climbers in the mountains this weekend, were climbing for themselves, not as any formal group or outing. Any attempt to paint the picture otherwise is inaccurate. It's always that way. I'm not familiar with the incident in question, but am certainly happy to hear that the "lost hiker" is...
