    Basin and Saddleback: winter

Damn, as much as we'd like to be there that weekend (always wanted to stay there), I'll be in Clearwater, FL at that time. Crap..................

Dude, the video ROCKS. Hope you don't mind if I provide a link to it. Seriously, the coolest think of the hike I think so far.

    Point Balk

If she hasn't, we both know a couple whacked out climbers who have :D . Straight up the gut of this drainage that looks (from the bottom) like a shear cliff. I marvel at it evertime I walk by it (includig the other day). How was it? It was described to me like this..... "Hell, hath no fury like...

Grace Day Climbing - Adirondacks (compiled Trip Reports)

As some of you may know, last Sunday (August 26, 2007), many forum members participated in a celebratory climb to honor Grace L. Hudowalski's 70th 46er completion anniversary. We attempted to put a different person on each summit that day. (BACKGROUND INFO HERE ) Far to many reports to list on...

Calamity on Calamity (Long) - 8/2/07

Thanks Doc - This -PICTURE- of yours is a perfect illustration of the rocks we had to scale up (and return down). As for the route, we followed your route (logically since our beta came from your partner ;) ). We missed on the Marcy cone, but musta been real close. We we under the last 150'...

BBQ'ing on the top of peaks

This is terrible, I can't believe you "supposed" responsible hiker would advocate this silliness in the precious mountains. You're all horrible people and shoud be ashamed of yourselves at the thought of such foolery. Do you have any any idea what the smell of grilling meat, gently wafting down...

Calamity on Calamity (Long) - 8/2/07

Yes, that is Rist. Thanks for the kind words about Nick, both you and Alan. We do share a bond. It goes beyond hiking, it really does. We enjoy each others company. I have a similar relationship with my daughter I'm pleased to say. We're so much alike though, it's a bit more tumultuous but...

Calamity on Calamity (Long) - 8/2/07

Okay, that might be an over-dramatization, but let's say, things didn't go according to plan. I generally don't write TR's anymore, unless there is something of interest or education, and this trip does qualify. We're up in Placid vacationing for the week and after a few hikes visiting old...

    Kilburn Mtn, Sentinel Range

Yes, I was talking about the ridges that run between Slide, Slide (N pk), Kilburn and Stewart. They are terrible. I should have been more clear. We actually went down to Monument Falls on the ridge BS is talking about. She is right, It was not bad at all. We called it Moose Ridge, cause when...

    Kilburn Mtn, Sentinel Range

I traversed over from Slide. You just got to lose elevation and shoot right up from the East side. The East side of the Sentinels is pretty friendly (for the most part). Stay off the ridges.

    Blue Mountain ???

I'd actually suggest Black Bear, near Inlet. Bout the same lenth as Blue. Steep little sucker, w/ good views. There's a firetower on Bald (Rondax), but that hike is about 20 minutes up, 15 down.

    Motel in Keene?

We've had the last few adkhighpeaks winter gatherings at the Ark Trail. They are quite satisfactory and certainly close enough to Keene for most people (within 2-3 miles). It ain't the Hilton, but I'd recommend them.

Anyone know what animal made these tracks?

Almost certainly a black bear. Somtimes I notice that the pinky toe doesn't almost make a deep impression (like the other ones do). Here's a similar EXAMPLE (but you can see the faint outline). Same thing with claws, unless its on a real good surface, they can be hard to see. The front and...

    Hike suggestions?

Bring water on the Dix hike, particulaly on a warm day. Not a lot up there and you will use if it's warm. I agree, the two hikes are comparable.

    GPS blackberry 8800

No, but I'll try to use my iPhone to check my mail and do a little web browsing next time I'm up there. If I'm able to get on, I'll send you a PM. ;) :D Sorry, I can't help it, I just love the thing. On a serious note, I'm not familiar with that one in particular, but on a general note, if...

    Info on the Santanoni's

Fairly dry on Santanoni last week, we did bushwhack most of it though. The parts we did do on trail were not bad.
