    Snow Walkers' Rendezvous

Snow Walkers’ Rendezvous This report is of a conference, not a hiking trip to a specific area, so moderators please feel free to move it to wherever seems appropriate. A friend of ours encouraged us to go to the Snow Walkers’ Rendezvous this past weekend at the Hulbert Outdoor Center in...

    Animals encountered on the trail?

I forgot about efts. I've seen those too. If I want to see bats, all I have to do is set up a chair in my yard, look toward the chimney on a summer evening, and watch the show. Wow, truly amazing. You've really put us all in our place! Were you lucky enough to get any good shots? Did you...

    Animals encountered on the trail?

Multiple sightings of the usual suspects most people see eventually while hiking, camping, canoeing (most but not all of these in the Adirondacks): bears moose hawks, bald eagles, grouse, owls, pheasant, many varieties of birds pine marten Coyote (my wife encountered while feeding on deer!)...

Grouse Attack on Rocky Branch Trail

We've often startled them along a trail, and usually they fly up in front of our faces and away. But once were were chased (literally) down the Blueberry foot trail in the Sewards, as it raised quite a fuss.

    Requesting Advice on Winter backpacking

It's been a part of my routine for a long time. And doesn't everyone recommend sleeping with a warm Nalgene? :D

Toughest 50 feet of Trail in the Daks???

The walk between Upper Works and the suspension bridge, and the Dix trail both seem to be uphill in both directions. Then there's the Lake Road...:(

Toughest 50 feet of Trail in the Daks???

I've only climbed Armstrong once, and that was back when there was a cable. Is the ladder in the same place, or did they reroute that section?

    Requesting Advice on Winter backpacking

Excellent suggestions on this thread. I have also found that chemical warmers help.

    Tice Teneyck

Probably useless information to most, but for those who might be: here is a brief description of the Ten Eyck family in Albany. This site refers to "Tys" which is probably an earlier spelling of Tice? The Ashokan Catskills: A Natural History refers to the "Tice Ten Eyck" spelling of the...

    Tice Teneyck

Ten Eyck is also a local Dutch name here (Albany cap. dist.), and is usually pronounced "ten (as in the number 10) Ike" here.

    sharing camp sites

I don't know about other states, but the only place in NY where I've seen a specific figure (8 persons for a lean-to) is in the 13th edition of Adirondack Trails:High Peaks Region. Most lean-tos in NY are designed with 8 people in mind, though some are smaller (6 people). Offhand, I don't see...

    Shelter Etiquette 101

I would do one of the first two poll choices: politely ask them to move over, or move on to another spot, depending upon my silent reaction to those occupying the lean-to. Generally it's never an issue.

    sharing camp sites

This doesn't fully answer your question, but from DEC State Land Camping rules: Lean-tos are available in many areas on a first come first served basis. Lean-tos cannot be used exclusively and must be shared with other campers. From DEC's Lands and Forests regulations (190.6) a. Open camps...

    WoodHull->Van Wyck 10/11/08

Though relatively short, it was right up there among the steeper bushwhacks I can recall doing. But going straight up was easier for me than side-hilling. Dick

Trail or Forest - what do you see?

Is the point of the question whether or to what extent the trail is viewed as a part of the forest, or something that "interrupts" the landscape? If so, I guess I'd say it depends upon the trail. Some minimal trails can really feel like a part of the woods, while some that are heavily...
