    What happens in Vegas...

Tom, wonderful photos! I agree, there is SO much to see in the desert! As to your photo IDs, I think the second one is a type of paintbrush.

First Woman to scale the 14 8Ks

The climb was apparently not without a little controversy: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100428/en_afp/nepalskoreaspainaustriawomenclimbingrecord http://climbing.about.com/b/2010/04/25/korean-climber-delays-annapurna-bid-amid-summit-controversy.htm I agree - all amazing stuff!

    Cathead Mtn?

It was closed several years ago, and I assumed it was permanent. Here is some discussion (several years old) on another forum, FWIW: http://www.adkforum.com/archive/index.php?t-259.html

Family Adventure Vacation in Colorado Rockies

It's been decades since we've been there, but two hikes come to mind in that area that might fit your criteria, though they may stretch the ascent requirement a tad: Loch Vale and Lake Helene. http://www.protrails.com/trail.php?trailID=56 http://www.protrails.com/trail.php?trailID=51

    Dealing with postholes and holers

Then I might respond with the quotation, often attributed to Oliver Wendell Holmes: "My right to swing my arm ends where my neighbor's nose begins". Or however it goes.

    Best Footwear for Fjording

I've used Salomon shoes for stream crossings as well, and they work very nicely. One was designed as a light hiking shoe, another specifically as a water shoe. Though I have both, the light hiking shoe (can't remember the model) worked beautifully both as a hiking shoe and for water crossings...

    Giant Trail Conditions

A group did Giant and RPR this past Saturday (3/13). Their trip report is here. Among other things, they remark about the "knee to thigh high frozen postholes" on Giant, making for tough footing!

Fitness for Training Old Farts 55+

I recover reasonably quickly. My cardio workouts are 40-45 minutes, and I'm quite tired, dripping with sweat afterwards. While doing cardio, I would have a difficult time carrying on a conversation. I feel great afterwards. edit: my cardio is usually the elliptical machine. On alternate...

Fitness for Training Old Farts 55+

I think I qualify for this thread. I work out at the gym 4-5 times per week, alternating cardio and weight machines (I've only been doing this for a few weeks now). I hike 1-2 times per week, on average. I consider myself to be out of shape at the moment. I'm 63.

    Leavitt (SW Hunter), Catskills 1-16-10

Yesterday was certainly a day to be out hiking. Temps were in the high 30’s (guessing), not a cloud in the sky, and no wind. Three of us (Dick, Joanne, Moonray) trudged up to Leavitt. Lots of ice climbers out that day, apparently outnumbering the hikers. We signed in at about 8:45 or so. For...

    Snowshoe gait with MSR Lightning

I bought these last year and experienced the same problem. I did not have the problem with the MSR Classics. I'm going to give them another try this winter see if I can get used to them. I'm sorry you're having the problem, but glad to hear it's not just my own clumsiness (well, not...

    Leonid Meteor Shower Tonight! (11/16 -> 11/17)

We arrived at Dunham Reservoir, near Grafton Lake, at 3:45AM under clear skies. Valerie joined us at about 4:30, and we stayed until 5:30. Our viewing area faced mainly toward the northeast, with some views to the north and east (guessing at the direction). In all I probably saw some 15-20...
