    Camping stove accidents

Mine is similar. An old Coleman Apex II stove (no longer made) suddenly flared up while lighting. It was sitting at the edge of a lean-to. A friend managed to grab it (dangerous!) and quickly took it from the lean-to to a rock nearby, turned it off, and it burned itself out. We tried a...

Hi David, Joane and I won't be doing the traverse either. Perhaps we can get together for a hike!

    Strangest trail activity you've observed?

On a short hike near our house, my wife encountered 4-5 coyotes feeding on a deer, c. 10 feet away. One looked up at her, blood dripping from its mouth, then thankfully went back to eating as my wife did an about-face. I went back there about a week later and there was nothing but a skeleton left.

    Strangest trail activity you've observed?

Not one, but two guys playing the didgeridoo. That has to be right up there for one of my strangest encounters.

Bear canister rental near Upper Works

I don't know where you're coming from, but here's a list of canister rental locations: http://atlas.wcs.org/globalconservation/northamerica/adirondacks/adirondackbear/47056726 You'll want to make sure it's a Garcia or another approved canister, not the BearVault.

    Indian Pass 8/2/09

We all know what incredibly wonderful weather we’ve been having in the Adirondacks, and apparently will continue to have over the next few days. It makes almost any hike pleasant. Even in less than ideal weather, a thruhike through Indian Pass is always enjoyable. Snickers, Beth, Edelweiss...

in support of a "Blue Bag Movement"

It may not be needed in some areas. Other places where there is a large concentration of people it can be a problem. I haven't been back to Colden Dam camping area in a while, but when we camped there several years ago we saw TP everywhere. I know Paria Canyon not the NE, but here's an...

Thanks for the memories. We did this hike years ago. Bill's description of the railroad situation is as we remember it.

    My Tarp is getting sticky

Backpacker Magazine (I know, you all subscribe faithfully! :D) mentions a product called Goof Off: http://www.goof-off.com/ http://www.epinions.com/pr-Housewares-Goof_Off_The_Ultimate_Remover/display_~reviews I've never tried it. It comes with a host of warnings, and I'm sure more expensive...

Sounds like a good day. How was the drive to the trailhead? Passable by a subaru?

    Moderate hikes near North Creek

Third vote for Crane. Peaked Pond Mt. is nice, I think the views from Crane are spectacular. You need to be comfortable climbing a ladder. Doing the entire loop makes for a more varied hike, IMO. You'll want to linger at the pond.

THE MAGNIFICENT 7--A TEAM OF 46er CONQUERS THE CL-50

Bob got most of the details, but here are a few other random thoughts: Trail: Our trip was done clockwise (Burntbridge TH to Peavine Swamp TH). The first half (or so) of trail had more ups and downs (nothing major), and the second half was largely Adirondack flat. Though we never rushed, and...
