    Stabilicers

I have also switched to Microspikes (lighter, easier to put on, stay on better). But I never lost a screw. I've heard some people recommend using glue to keep them in (?). Perhaps the conditions (not enough snow/ice) did not warrant their use?

    Two-strap snowshoes?

Has anyone heard of or had any experience (preferably 1st hand) with two-strap snowshoes, sometimes referred to as "European style"? The MSR Lightning Ascents are available at several stores in a 2-strap model (example). They appear to be identical to the 3-strap model in every way except for...

    Gore Mt alternative

I actually think the Black Mountain Ponds area I mentioned would be a better choice, if not too far. But either would work for your situation. Other possibilities: Pharaoh Mt. Wilderness. Lots of lakes and places to camp in the area, and Treadway or Pharaoh Mt. are climbing possibilities...

    Gore Mt alternative

Rickie, So many possibilities! Peaked Mt. may not be a bad suggestion. It's in the Siamese Ponds area. I have been there several times, but not in winter. Here is a link to someone's TR. I don't know if this is too far of a drive for you, but you might try the Black Mountain Ponds area...

    Northville-Placid Trail record

Thanks Walt. I am not a stranger to the trail. In my post I mentioned having hiked it once in sections, and once as a thruhike. We've also hiked several parts of it multiple times. We don't fish, but photography will be an important part of this trip, as well as side-trips. Thanks for the...

Traffic ticket for stickers on rear window

Suffice it to say that if a passenger was seated next to that window, they wouldn't get much of a view!:)

    White gas shelf life?

FWIW, Coleman says the following on its site: An un-opened container of Coleman® Fuel stored in a dry area with no rapid extreme changes in temperature will remain viable for five to seven years. An opened container stored in the same area will remain viable for up to two years though will be...

I know of his reputation. Such feats are impressive, but they're just not my style. I wouldn't do it, even if I could, which I can't! The trip we are planning is about as different from his as one could get.

    White gas shelf life?

I know we've used a can of Coleman that was close to 10 years old with no problems.

    Backpacker's "America's 10 Most Dangerous Hikes"

Agreed. As a hike, Buckskin Canyon is virtually flat, save for one 12-ft. rock wall that one must negotiate. And because it's so enclosed (you feel at times that you're in a cave), the temperatures are quite cool (relatively speaking!). We went in May, one of the typically driest months of...

    Backpacker's "America's 10 Most Dangerous Hikes"

I got the same email. I've only done two of these hikes, and I was surprised to find them on this list. Our TR and pictures of Buckskin Gulch. (Buckskin Gulch hiking pictures begins from the 23rd picture). Our Grand Canyon backpack was not on the Bright Angel trail, but the less used and...

    Northville-Placid Trail record

I have hiked the NPT twice – once in sections and once as a thruhike. We thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and the experience. We are now contemplating the idea of breaking a NPT record - for the longest time on the trail. I’m talking about a thruhike with re-supply, not section hikes. OK, I’m...

Grass Mt and Spruce Pk (Vermont)

Nice report. Wish I could have made it. One correction: it's Joanne's second VT hike. She's also done Camel's Hump, though she may have forgotten about it. :D

How do you store your gear?

Taking it a step further...www.adkgearstorage.com or some such...pay by the week...by the month...by the year...franchises throughout the Adirondacks... On the other hand, there's already a website that covers this. :D
