    Major Snow Storm coming

As we in the TV news business know, "fear sells."

Visiting ponds with an inflatable dinghy

Excellent! I've thought a lot about doing just what you've done, but it never got beyond the thought stage. But the descriptive accounts of your dinghy trips and information about your craft might finally prompt me into action. And we could have a sub-set here on Views: VIEWS FROM THE TARN

    Pawtuckaway question

I think those bounce microwave signals. Don't know whose, though.

Couchsachraga to the Cold River. Looking for the Northwest Passage.

I got so cold just reading this, I had to have a half-hour hot bath! You should compile your reports, Neil, put 'em into book form. Real life adventures in the Adks. Lots better than the abandoned slide climbing effort. You'd sell way more than than Spence....

Cheney, North River and 5 Sawtooth peaks

Like buckyball1, I have found New England hiking and bushwhacking to be much less contentious than that in the Adirondacks. There are peaks on private property here, too, but they're climbed without contention. And hundreds of jars and canisters have survived through the years, some in...

    odds and ends in NH

Since you were bagging views, Jim, I hope you took the very short side trip to "the outlook" just off the Success Trail. The view from the ledges there across to the Bald Caps is outstanding. Woulda been the best of your trip. Enough to make you forget about the Success Trail's quarter-mile...

Camping in VT near Burke - Umpire - East Haven 3k's ??

Hope to be up in that neck of the woods in November. Curious as to location of the aforementioned South America Road. Any chance it's in the Northern Hemisphere??

    Signal (VT) 10/21

I shoulda joined you. Shame on me for copping out. As you so clearly demonstrate, who needs sleep? I would've had two hours, too, and we coulda sleepwalked through that sucker on NoDoz. You're a man on a mission! Looks like you'll be a finest fiftier before me. jt

    Cold Hollow/Worcester Ridge (VT)

Quite a day, Jim! Cold Hollow's a cool mt., don't you think? Quite a proliferation of moose paths up there. Audrey, Pat and I traversed the Worcester range a couple of years ago and lost count of the number of "bumps." Somewhere along there we hit the Finest Fifty high point, aka Putnam County...

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

re: GPS I'm not a gadget person either; map and compass always got me through anything. But going off into more and more obscure places, almost always solo, I thought a GPS might be a good "if all else fails" tool. My wife bought me one last fall. Now I use map and compass and have eased into...

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

WARNING! Now that you've done one successfully, you'll go again, and again, and again, and buy a GPS and bore all your friends recounting your adventures. Anyway, congratulations and welcome to the club!

Blue Ridge, Wolf cub & Wolf, plus a NHHH finish on Chocorua, sept 29th-30th

Great report, Julie... and congratulations to Jean Sebastian! Chocorua was a great place to finish, although a canister would've been nice.... and Albee, unfortunately the aforementioned Bill Bowden was the patch man. Which seems a trivial thing to say on the eve of his funeral.

A Gentle Reminder About Dogs on Trails

I especially love it when a dog bounds down the trail, barking angrily, teeth bared, in full attack mode, and the owner materializes, all smiles, saying something innane like, "Oh, it's okay... he doesn't mean it...he's really very gentle...all bark and no bite" and pulls the snarling beast back...

Farewell to Bill Bowden Outdoorsman, Wuss Formerly Known as Bushwack Bill, 9/29/07

I first saw Bill in action on West Bond in 2000. He was 53 then, my age, and was supervising four or five 10-12 year olds, helping them change into bushwhacking clothes for a perilous descent into the Pemi. "That guy must be crazy!" I told my 16 year old daughter. But they whacked to the far...
