    Teddy the Dog is Missing

Six Feet Under Did anyone see the HBO show last night? It always starts with someone dying. On last night's show a hiker was hiking along on a mountain trail in California and stops for the view and to catch his breath. Just then a mountain lion jumps him. The next camera shot shows the...

Camping in South Meadow in Adirondacks: Need details

Watch out South Meadow can be a real party place on the weekends. Bring earplugs! The only time that I did the Range by camping at South Meadow, we drove to Keene Valley and started there, finishing at South Meadow. I don't know why, but the walk out from Marcy Dam was painful. I think that...

    Rare Woodpecker sighting questioned

Back in April we were excited to learn that the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker - long thought to be extinct, was sighted in Arkansas. I was so impressed that I made the woodpecker my avatar. VFTT thread Now, three ornithologists are disputing the claim. A scientific paper is about to be published...

    Climbing Colorado's 14R's

Interesting article We are indeed fortunate in New York that our 46 High Peaks are protected and accessible to all. Our Governors/legislature/hiking organizations/environmental groups have made that possible. From the article:

    Frankenpine approved by APA today

Hey rondak46 Go hijack somebody elses thread - this aint about ski areas or the economy of the Adirondacks, etc. It's about fake trees that may or may not look like pine trees or toilet brushes. In researching this issue about cell phone towers in the Adirondack Park, I learned a...

    Frankenpine approved by APA today

Update The Adirondack Council may go to court on this. John Sheehan, the Council President calls it the "darkest day I've seen in the last 32 years in the history of the park agency." Strong words, indeed. He also said: He can turn a phrase! :D Times Union Article from HikerBob: from...

    eagle slide conditions.

Do Eagle on a dry day Heed TCD's advice and don't do this in the rain. Wait a day (or two) after a wet day. I don't think conditions vary much - other than dry/wet days. I've done it a couple of times in the summer on warm, sunny days and wouldn't do it without such weather.

And To the person that dinged me for this thread, with the comment 'political'. Jeez - I don't think you get it. I'm sure that the moderators don't see this thread as an inappropriate political discussion. Certainly we can discuss the appropriateness of a decision affecting the our "Views...

    Frankenpine approved by APA today

Today the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) approved a conditional permit for a cell phone company to build a 104-foot tower disguised as a white pine tree and which environmentalists dubbed "frankenpine." The APA reviewed 1700 pages of testimony and concluded that the proposed cell tower, to be...

    Aron Ralston keeps going

Dateline NBC In case you missed it the first time, NBC is rebroadcasting the two hour Dateline episode with Aron Ralston and Tom Brokaw. It's on at 8pm tonight. It is a fascinating story and the program is well done. Brokaw goes back with Ralston to the Utah canyon where Ralston cut off his...

    Grizzly deaths

More information This attack was quite unusual, according to this new information. Read the article. It provides a lot more detail. They had taken every precaution, but were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were mauled, not eaten by a predatory bear. Very sad. Anchorage...

    Great Range Traverse - 6/25

Pros and Cons Guinness - Even though "starting" on Marcy in the morning (from the Loj) is a little easier, I find it more rewarding to finish on Marcy in the evening in the dwindling light. It makes for a more dramatic hike and maybe an easier end - as I'm always finishing late in the evening. :D

Iceland - The Long and Winding Road Pt. 1

Nice reports And very cooling on this hot day. BTW - if you want to relive part of your trip - go see Batman Returns. I stayed through the credits to see where it was filmed and low and behold the "asian" scenes were filmed in Iceland!

    Great Range Traverse - 6/25

Nice Report! The "secret" to doing a Great Range hike (when you are older and wiser :D ) is to start at the Loj/HPIC and end in Keene Valley. The elevation gain going from KV to the Loj is 9500ft. The elevation gain from the Loj to KV is 8400ft. It took me years to learn that! :D The...
