    Tuckerman's Ravine 4/30/05

Thanks Dave. It always seems different from the pictures to when you're actually there and trying to figure out which one is named, and then figure out what it's named. This is especially true when the snow starts melting and exposing more rocks and less gully. The gully between Sluice (#9) and...

    Tuckerman's Ravine 4/30/05

April 30, 2005 After several weeks of watching everyone else on VFTT having fun at Tuckerman’s with the last remnants of snow in NE, we decided that we had to get there just so we could use our winter gear one last time. Also like a lot of folks on Views, we are planning on heading out west...

    Everest Deaths

Unfortunately, this is the time of year where a lot of the guided groups make their summit attempts. Let's hope that the rest of this month is nothing but success stories.

    Gear when you travel

We're heading out west too and had the same question. In the end, we are going to ship our questionable gear a week in advance just to make sure we don't have problems at the airport. Here is a TSA link that has lists of acceptable items (thanks to another thread). Ice axes are fine but it...

The Taxman Cometh for the AMC?

There are different tax laws within the classification of being "non profit" . Schools, municipalities, and various organizations might be deemed as non profit, but could be treated differently tax wise. Most work on a "funding" system of accounting (Harvard is definitely not in this category...

I need a cool helmet for hiking

Chip, I've checked them out and agree that the Petzl Ecrin Roc is the one to get (at least if you're not going too technical). The adjustments are attached to the helmet as opposed to the strapping plus it allows more head room for a hat in winter, it's well ventilated, and can be used for ice...

    Imp Shelter

Hi Jasonst, We stayed at the Imp site last September. No problems with the stream but there really aren't any good size pools, just a rock outcrop to the stream and we pumped from there, but it is a good flow. Hope this helps, Bill

    NH48 and a baby

Hi Percious, I'd definitely agree with both JJ and i12 about Jackson, and you might consider Pierce. I'd recommend these because the Mizpah hut is in the area in case you needed to stop somewhere. You might consider Cannon too, but not from the Hi-Cannon trail (ladders!). If you get concerned...

    Online Shopping Options

Sierra Trading Post, Cabela's, EMS, LL Beans, and Backcounty. Sometimes I'll hit the manufacturers sites too like Mt Hardwear especially if I'm looking for specs on weight and materials. Hope this helps, Bill

Fuel quotient for a 5 day backpack?

Hi Doug, I totally agree and no doubt that even the same model stove can produce different results. Cleanliness, fuel used (I failed to mention I used white gas), and conditions are all contributing factors. My stove testing was for an upcoming trip and I used worst case scenario too...no...

Fuel quotient for a 5 day backpack?

Hi Bantu Boy, I was testing my stove this weekend to do exactly what you are trying to figure out too. I came up with 3 minutes to boil 1 cup, and used 1oz of fuel from a cold start. 2 ounces per day will mean that you can boil at least a quart, so I would agree with Doug and Pete....consider...

    Lost Hiker??

After reading Ricks post on Boomhower "Lost on the NLP", I wanted to rekindle this thread to see if anyone has heard anything more on Mr. Sypek. Based on what SJ's post it sounds like he might have been on a personal mission and I'd hate for some group of kids or family out on their first Spring...

    Hiking in CA

Hi BA, There are quite a few publications about the Sierras that might be helpful. Secor's book is a great guide. http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=1812930&parent_category_rn=10574068&vcat=REI_SEARCH I am heading out there in July this...

    sleeping bag?

Sierra Designs Wild Bill - Regular is $70 and the long is a few bucks more. +20 rating but I just got mine at the end of last year so I haven't tested it in summer. http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?memberId=12500226&productId=39578

    REI Members?

I have been a member for a while and I'm quite pleased with the overall experiences. I also agree with Jasonst, the credit card really isn't a worthwhile deal. However, between the rebates, the garage sales (if you can get to one), the outlet, and the customer service, I think it's an overall...

    gorp/trail mix?

Hersey's chips during winter (usually chocolate but peanut ones are good too), lightly salted peanuts (any kind), Goldfish or Cheezit's, dried fruits like pineapple or bananas, licorice, even broken pieces of a Powerbar.

    going solo

Hi Dick, I did my first solo last year and I am not afraid to say that I was not comfortable at all and doubt I would do it again. The funny thing was, I hadn't thought about going solo, I just wanted to get out and no one else could go, so I went alone. You can prepare all you want and bring...
