    Problem with Cresta Boots

My first pair of Crestas went for 7 years and way beyond their tread life (with several thousand miles) before I retired them from mountain duty. The second pair is only two years old. Neither had tongue migration. My son's pair are fine also. The tongue is fully gusseted. I'm thinking that...

    Unsupported ADK 46 Traverse

Who needs Amazon when there's this epic tale to read. Superb storytelling. Gotta hand it to you, Geranimals.

    New Field Guide for Trees

I have a copy of the Maine guide to trees and I highly recommend it. Well worth the $7.

    I hiked with an umbrella...proudly

After my first hike in a thunderstorm I named my hiking poles "Thundersticks", and that's what I call them to this day.

The Precipice Trail - Acadia NP - 8/25/09

Precipice Trail is such fun! My son begged me for years to go on it and I wouldn't do it. Finally I gave in. The first time I said what crazy person would put a trail up here?! The second time I couldn't understand what I was worried about the first time. The third time and fourth times I...

Etiquette of "Please take my picture"

Smile and ask. I make it a point to always offer to take pictures of others. 9 out of 10 times the person reciprocates. And I always feel bad for the family when I see one parent taking a picture with Mom and the kids, but Dad is left out. I have an entire family lifespan where I simply...

    Black Folder in My Pictures

Tim, Buy yourself a lottery ticket. I opened up the folder and moved the movies out of it. Why the movies? Because it's a folder of a trip to Acadia with 400 pictures and a few movies. I realized it would be easier if I had a clue where to start. Last night I was on the web and used...

    Black Folder in My Pictures

BlaCk, not Blank I seem to be having an inordinate number of computer issues but this one baffles me and my google search hasn't turned up any clues. I use Windows XP (please don't boo me) and tonight when I opened up My Pictures one of the photo folders was BLACK around the pictures! So...

Anyone use that "5 hour energy"

I switched to these two years ago. Great stuff. Control your sugar intake by using chocolate (my favorite). I use half strength at first then as I start gaining elevation I'll be sure to make it 75% or full strength depending on how I feel. I really like being able to control my sugar intake...

    100-Mile Wilderness Attempt June 2009

Jessbee, I have Yaffee's book but haven't tried those particular recipes (or my variation of them). Thanks. With food allergies and celiac I only take my own food so new ideas I can adapt to my needs are helpful. I'm aiming for a driving, camping, hiking trip to see the Sierras in 2011...

    100-Mile Wilderness Attempt June 2009

The area is beautiful, the rain relentless but it's your description of food...do you use any particular recipe source? I'm always looking for good food to dehydrate. Won't touch the store stuff.

    Need CAR for backcountry roads

Honda CRV AWD 32 mpg highway 28 mpg overall 35 year Honda fan. I love the CRV. Pretty good clearance and I've negotiated it over some big rocks. Carries all the gear, nice sleeping, but...it's got a hefty car payment. I'd seriously consider the FIT.

The end of a long journey

You earned that champagne! What you accomplished is 5 hours and 9 minutes of hiking over 5.8 miles you couldn't do a month ago! So you didn't get to the top THIS time. You will the next. Congratulations!

The end of a long journey

I sometimes don't know who to thank more. The neurosurgeon who successfully did my brain surgery or the physical therapist who understands my passion for the woods, my need to be in the woods. My PT thinks I'll be writing trip reports from the mountains in 2010 and I'm holding him (and me) to...

The end of a long journey

I understand. Enjoy tomorrow. Live life. Be grateful. And then say a little thank you to those skilled hands that put us back together.

    Maine in August

Used to stay two weeks every year in Baxter, usually at South Branch Pond. Bears every day. On the pond's edge, at the blueberry patches, prowling the picnic tales and most definitely trying to raid the chained dumpster at night. Things may have changed since then. My guess is they have, since...

Lupine Fields Trek in Sugar Hill - 6/20/09

That is one great slide show! The music was perfect. The lupines are in bloom in the Adirondacks also. They were planted in the revegetation areas roadside in the Inlet/Old Forge area and now are a beautiful sight. I watched one of your other slideshows and I've got a question. There's a...
