    Foiled on Abraham(Lincoln), 1/20

Let the cross-river rivalry begin! I'm sure you've done Ascutney at least, grouseking!

Which Mountain to die on (was: Just curious)

Guy originally chose Cannon cliff but couldn't go through with it. Personally, if I'm forced to think about such things, I would choose falling off the Knife Edge after barehandedly fighting off a group of bears who had insulted my family while the blue angels gave me a collective wing wag and...

    Foiled on Abraham(Lincoln), 1/20

This is my first TR in quite a while, and unfortunately it will be a short one. So I rolled out of bed at 5:30 on Saturday morning in the pitch black. Hopped in the car, and after a quick breakfast at Crossroads Cafe in WRJ I headed up toward Warren, VT and the two fine 4000 footers it hosts...

Are Tire Chains allow on unpaved road in Northeast?

My gf has studded tires on all 4 wheels and I'd say it makes a difference on a small car such as her's. It makes it about as good as my old buick without studs. Here's a link for state-by-state restrictions on chains/studded tires. Also, thanks to a recent trip to the garage for an alignment...

    Repairing Gaiters After Crampon Run-In?

I agree with doug. I permanent fix is better than the mess of duct tape (on clothes at least). A bunch of sites sell repair kits that contain cordura patches that would be optimal. Simply froogle "cordura repair" and it should yield some options. Here's a thread from another site that deals...

    Backcountry Skiing/Boarding on the Bigelows

Does anyone know if this is possible? Has anyone skied down the trails before? I've hiked the AT from the south and across the ridge, over little bigelow, and out, but never been on the Warden's Trail and can't remember the rest. And this is assuming there will be snow at some point, of course.

Vose Spur 10/22/06: The Ultimate "WHY AM I HERE???!!!"

This is my favorite TR on this site so far. Bar none. No question. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. It may be the wonderful sarcasm, the Boyle-esque beautiful picture painted bleak, or that it just touched something deep. Oh, wait, those are scars. Beautiful painful f**king scars...

Underhill State Park Off Season Camping?

Underhill closed about a week ago, but the Stone Lodge in Stowe opens November 10th. VT state parks don't offer too many year round oppertunities for camping unfortunately but this one's pretty neat. Here's the operating schedule: here just use the dropdown to find the lodge. Don't forget to...

    Headlamp

I like BD as well, and have multiple Moonlights due to stocking up before they pulled them. Dunno why I like them so much. Very light for the amount of light shed as well as a very broad beam. Like many, the most recent models had different brightness settings as well as a strobe. I bought a...

    Mooning the cog

And some of us got our first view of the cog from a hundred miles away. Worked/lived around sebago lake growing up. On a nice day, you could see Mount Washington. Unfortunately on those days the view was marred by a black plume rising off the peak. It's the same in vermont now too. And most...

    coffee

So many methods here! I love my mug french press which has a rubber bottom and a normal lid if you want to leave the press at home. There was one similar on this thread already. The stainless interior is very easy to clean since I use it often for coffee but use the press lid more for tea. It...

    Hut-to-Hut Systems

I remember reading an ad long ago (possibly in amc outdoors or something close) for backcountry yurts in the Berkshires. Anyone know about these?

    snowshoe binding recommendation

It's sad that Tubbs sold out to K2. Sadder they moved to Vermont in the first place. Still have a pair that was made in Norway, Maine. I think that places them at around 65 years old. Went up Cannon with them back in 1999. The leather/rawhide bindings don't quite live up to today's standards...

    10-15-06 Rugged Whiteface and Passaconaway

Great report, grouseking. I'll agree with you that they can end up a long day. At least you always take pictures. Lyndonville! Tell me you picked up some Trout River and Horn Pout brews while up there... TR's scottish ale and HP's no-limit ale are some of my favorites.

the hut has potable tap water. And a neat aquifer-powered pump to go with it out back.

    Glowing Fungi or Mushrooms ?

The quickest way to tell if a guide is outdated would be to see if there is a species in there named Hericium ramosum. This is the species name that actually doesn't exist anymore. This was renamed coralloides, and what used to be known as coralloides was renamed americanum. Silliness. One can...

    Glowing Fungi or Mushrooms ?

The first one looks like Hericium coralloides. You can differentiate it from Hericium americanum by the shorter teeth and differentiate both of these from Hericium erinaceus (hedgehog fungus) by their branched bodies. These classifications have changed in recent years, with names being changed...

    Cairn field near Jamaica, Vermont

I must recant my assuredness on whether it is the Peck I said. I called the PD in Fairfield and no one there knew of this connection/relation. The coincidences are just too much though. I may try again tomorrow to reach David Peck, the actual chief, express my condolences, compliment on the...

    Cairn field near Jamaica, Vermont

That settles it. It's the Roger from CT. He died on 9/11/95. No indication on the web of how he died, but he was from Trumbull, Fairfield county. Here's a cached article about his brother, mentioning Roger briefly. If anyone has a myspace acct and some serious tact/gall, his son is on there...
