Hale from Zealand Rd. 7 Jun 14

I saved Garfield for last. I didn't want to finish on Owl's Head or some other peak no one would want to do with me. Shooting for June 28.

Hale from Zealand Rd. 7 Jun 14

The trail from the parking lot on Zealand Rd. is in excellent condition. No blow downs and very little mud. Made great time: 90 minutes up and 65 minutes down. I picked an easy hike for #47!

Black fly reports for your area?

Hiked Hale from Zealand Rd. 7 June. Surprisingly few bugs all day! Nothing on the trail or summit and just a few black flies in the parking lot around noon when we returned to the car. This is the first time I have been out in June and not drained dry by black fly bites!

    Franconia Ridge Knife Injury

How is there limited cell phone coverage on Franconia Ridge? Isn't Cannon summit across the notch full of cell phone antennae?

    Trail respect

Post-holing can result in very dangerous conditions for others to follow when the soft snow refreezes. I was descending after a solo hike and moving at a good pace. The packed trail was very solid after several very cold days, so I was safely bare booting. However, someone had post-holed on the...

Winter car camping campsites in NH and VT?

At the last Winter Gathering at Barnes Field, the well pump froze overnight. Luckily, we had pumped 10 gallons or so the night before and left it in the warming tent, so we had hot water for hiking the next day. I second the idea of another Winter Gathering!

    Tenting near the Bonds

Are you planning to approach the Bonds from the south (Lincoln Woods) or the north (Zealand Road)? The responses above are primarily useful if you are approaching from the south. When I hiked the Bonds, we approached from the north. We stayed at Guyot camp, so we weren't looking for a site, but...

Temporary Closure of Lincoln Woods trail

Just wondering ... If one was doing a midweek traverse from, say Zealand Road to the Kanc intending to exit via LWT, would one be stranded at the Osseo trail junction? Has the forest service posted these trail closure bulletins at all the trail heads? I am not planning such a hike, but it...

New York Man Dies While Hiking in White Mountains

On my Bonds hike last weekend, I went through an 80-oz. bladder on the way to Guyot camp, another 80 oz. on the Bonds loop, and another 80 oz. returning to the car at Zealand. Our group of 4 hikers went through 15 gallons of water in camp between cooking and drinking.

    Bonds Photo Op

After at least 3 cancelled attempts due to bad weather, I was finally able to make it to the Bonds this past weekend. My brother Tom flew in from Buffalo to join my sons Chris and Kevin for the trip. We wanted to avoid the weekend crowds at Guyot campsite, so we drove up Friday morning and hit...

    Wildcats and rain - 6/27/13

I remember traversing this section of trail when I hiked the Wildcats in the winter. The rock was covered in ice and snow. I just held my breath as I crept across this steep section, hoping my crampons wouldn't slip!

    Best Route For Isolation

We did Isolation via Rocky Branch last year, skipping the Engine Hill bushwhack. It might have saved some mileage, but wouldn't have saved any time. Better when the ground is frozen. Rocky Branch was wet, but not too bad. The crossings were not a problem, but YMMV. Be careful looking for the...

    Black Flies

Any updates on the black flies in the Whites? Thinking of doing the Bonds next weekend and was wondering if their season is coming to an end. Thanks.

If I don't finish on one of the Bonds, I am saving Garfield for #48. I figure that's a good one to invite others to join me.

    Bonds Photo Op

Thanks everyone for the location. I'm pretty sure I will be able to find it now. I even got an idea of the shot and the angle from playing around with Google Earth and lining up the Bondcliff summit with the slides on West Bond. We are thinking of hiking the 3 Bond summits after making camp at...

    Bonds Photo Op

My sons and I plan to hike the Bonds this year. Isn't the following photo from the White Mountain Guide from one of the Bonds? Which summit/view point is this? From where is the picture taken? Do you need someone to take the picture for you or can you set up a camera with a timer? I'm...

2 guys, 3 days, 4 Border Patrol encounters and 5 peaks to finish the NEHH

If they asked me how old I am and expected a quick reply, I would definitely fail that test. I really don't keep track of that knowing I can always subtract to get my age! If I head near the border, I'll be sure to do the math ahead of time.
