Snow Lovers May Be Rejoicing On Friday 2/8

We got about 28 in. in Reading, north of Boston. It started with a sitcky, wet snow for an hour or two, so the cars were crusted over once I got them dug out of their drifts. It took me all day yesterday to dig out - and that's with a snow blower. I still have to get out today and finish...

Heroic rescue on Franconia Ridge - Sept 19, 2012

I'm a little surprised that AMC sent out a single rescuer from Greenleaf Hut. Granted, the hut croo often display super-human talents, carrying huge loads up and down from the hut. Glad everything turned out OK. Great work by the rescuers!

    Compass bearing for BB

Made it I finally got around to bagging Owls Head a couple weekends back. It really isn't all that bad as long as you are mentally prepared for the long exit hike. I had all the bushwhack info ready to go, but since I was solo and making really good time on the established trails, I skipped the...

    A Bond-ing Backpack - 8/23 & 8/24//12

Nice Idea Wow, nice trip report! I am planning a Bonds trip, and never thought about hitting the Bonds after making camp at Guyot. I like this idea a lot! It means a shorter hike out the next day when we may also try to bag Hale. I would also love being on a summit for a sunset! I think we...

    Compass bearing for BB

Great, thanks. Sounds like a nice change of pace for the descent and better than descending the slide.

    Compass bearing for BB

Brutus Bushwhack for descent I plan to ascend the slide, but come down using the Brutus Bushwhack. Do you go by the "big rock" landmark on the way up from the slide?

Owl's Head Coordinates (via Black Pond)

Thanks NHT, Thanks for the clarification. I'm still not sure if I will stick with the trails or try the Black Pond bushwhack. I'm having trouble gathering interested partners for this particular hike, so I may be solo. I will probably throw the waypoints into my GPS and make a decision on the...

    Options for Bonds Hike

What day of the week did you camp at Guyot? We are attempting to get there on Friday afternoon to avoid the Saturday crowds.

    Options for Bonds Hike

fee? If you get stuck in one of the overflow sites at Guyot, do you still have to pay the fee? I can imagine some of these lesser sites would be overpriced.

Thanks That was what I was hoping to find out. Thanks!

Owl's Head Coordinates (via Black Pond)

Geeze Geeze, I'm sorry I asked. I always carry a map and compass. I'm just trying to figure out if the 340 degree heading and/or GPS waypoint lead me to hit the trail before I get to Lincoln Brook, or if I have to cross the brook to get to the trail.

Owl's Head Coordinates (via Black Pond)

Nice list of coordinates. Thanks. When you took the waypoint for BP Whack North, were you on the Lincoln Brook trail where it runs south of Lincoln Brook, or was the trail still on the other side (north side) of Lincoln Brook? I plotted this point on my map and it looks like at this point, the...

    What constitutes an "unsupported hike"?

... and bring your own oxygen and water.

    Options for Bonds Hike

I guess that means if you don't stay at Guyot, but camp somewhere else, you should hang a bag or bring a canister. Bears are definitely in the area.

    Options for Bonds Hike

Bears? Is it recommended that you hang a bear bag if camping at Guyot?

    Options for Bonds Hike

I like this idea. If there are viable, legal sites around here, I would be up for that. I tend to avoid crowds, so Guyot on a summer Saturday night might not be for me. I have camped plenty of times in the Adirondacks, finding the one small patch of campable land in the woods, so I am not a...

    Options for Bonds Hike

We have to drive up Saturday morning, so best case scenario puts us at Guyot around 1:00. When you say the site will be full, does that mean the caretaker will turn you away? Are there other places to camp around here? (I assume not.) BTW, are camp fires allowed at Guyot? (I also assume not.)

    Options for Bonds Hike

How early does Guyot fill up? Looking at the weather and calendar (running out of weekends), I am thinking of driving up early Saturday and camping at Guyot Saturday night. How early would I have to get there to get a platform?

    Bondcliff!! I made it!! 7/14/12

Where is Proof Number 2 Where is the picture you titles "Proof number 2" taken? I assume you need someone to take this for you (i.e., can't use your camera timer to take the pic).

    Options for Bonds Hike

I am down to 7 on my NH48. Still left are the Bonds, Zealand and Hale. Looking for options. I am planning to do this hike with my sons. A one-day hike is probably pushing it, unless we can arrange a car spot or key swap. We could leave off Hale and do that on another trip, but it kills me to...
