3rd Annual VFTT Adirondack BBQ and Gathering August 18th thru August 21st

Missing Pot Cook pot, that is. Did anyone find a lost cook pot at the Gathering? I left it near the cook stove last weekend. It's an Evernew titanium 1 Liter pot with cover. If you found it, please PM or email me. Thanks!

3rd Annual VFTT Adirondack BBQ and Gathering August 18th thru August 21st

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! I'll get in line and add my thanks to our hosts for letting us invade their backyard. Every year, the summer gathering is scheduled during my family's vacations, so I have never made it. Luckily, we had to reschedule it this year so I got to go! :) Now I know what I have...

3rd Annual VFTT Adirondack BBQ and Gathering August 18th thru August 21st

Getting There I'm still shooting to make it to The Gathering in time for dinner at Crickets on Friday. From home in Reading, MA, I usually take the Pike to 87N. However, I am probably leaving from work in Tewksbury, so I was thinking of going through NH and VT. Does anyone have any experience...

Camping and Swimming Around Waterville Valley or Franconia Notch

Thanks for all the suggestions. I bruised my lower back and ended up not going, but saved all of the destinations for a future trip. Smarts Brook looks like a nice spot. I found this link to some swimming holes in the Whites.

Camping and Swimming Around Waterville Valley or Franconia Notch

I am planning to take my 12-year old son up to the Whites this weekend. We want to camp out overnight and do something easy on Saturday. I was thinking of perhaps finding a nice short hike to a swimming hole with a campground or campsite nearby for some car camping. Does anyone have any good...

    Night hiking Monadnock

I hiked Mondanock in Sept. 2003 during a full moon (and with Mars blazing away in the sky). We started from the State Park and took White Dot all the way up and down. The tree canopy down low is a little thick on White Dot, so it was hard to see even with the full moon. However, once we got up a...

Rainier update from the VFTT crew!

Great movie. That's a big rock! Any updates from the VFTT team?

3rd Annual VFTT Adirondack BBQ and Gathering August 18th thru August 21st

Gathering Questions I'm hoping to make it up to the Gathering later this month. A few questions: How far is parking from where we will be setting up tents? Is anyone planning on bagging any 46ers on Sat? I'd be up for doing anything other than Marcy, Algonquin, Haystack, Dix, Gothics, Colden...

    GPS oddity

Huh. I've had an eTrex Summit for years now and never seen this behavior. I thought the software was smart enough to toss out data that is obviously incorrect. Are you up to date on software versions?

    VFTT MT Rainier Attempt, 8/1-3

Godspeed, Friends! What?! The Doctor didn't make the cut?! Wow, this is the team that I would want with me on Rainier! (Ya know, if it weren't for this darn, new job ...) Have a safe, great time and bring back lots of stories for the Gathering campfires. Remember, those of us stuck in our...

    my car break in

Isn't that insurance fraud? I don't know if the insurance company could prove that you lied about locking the doors, but if the car is really trashed or never recovered, I bet they'd make a good effort to avoid having to pay a claim.

    10 body lbs. = 5 pack lbs or 2 boot lbs ?

Maybe the ratio differs from person to person. I don't really notice a big difference when I am wearing my crampons or snow shoes. Now, if the snow shoes start to ball up with wet snow - that I notice!

    my car break in

I have heard this advice offered in the past. If you leave your car unlocked and it is stolen, won't your insurance company give you grief (i.e., not pay your claim) for not locking the car?

    The Heat

Bring on the Snow! I'm mostly a 3-season hiker - Autumn, Winter and Spring. I hate the heat and humidity. Plus I never have to bring bug spray when it's 10 degrees out. (Still pack the sun block, though.)

    Hydration Packs vs. Water Bottles

Refilling Camelbacks I carry a Pur Hiker water filter. To reill my Camelback, I pop off the bite valve and connect the tube directly to the output of my filter. Then I pump away, filling the bladder without every having to take it out of my pack. (I find it hard to get a full water bladder into...

    High-wire bear gymnast!

The visitor's center at the ADK Loj has pictures of bears climbing out onto the cables over Marcy Dam to get to food bags hung there. Determined, hungry bears can be very acrobatic when it comes to getting to bear bags. I’m sure this is one of the factors behind the new bear canister requirement.

    true north compass deviation?

Hopefully, this isn't too dumb of a question, but why don't cartographers draft maps with vertical lines that point to magnetic north instead of geographic north? Then I wouldn't have to remember whether I need to add or subtract the deviation printed on the map. (I'm sure when I'm lost and...

    Washington Injury?

GPS info? When reporting an injury, is supplying GPS coordinates helpful? Are rescuers typically equipped with and trained in the use of GPS units? I usually know where I am (Not always, but usually) and would always give rescuers the trail location of a victim. But I would think GPS...

    Bites

I always hike with my brother during bug season. They swarm over him and mostly leave me alone. Can't explain it.
