2 Million Vertical in 1 Year

I would tend to agree that 150,000 / year will keep you in hiking shape, if that's all your aerobics, you'll stay in shape just doing that. I can't hike as often, so I do aerobics Mon - Fri so that I can hike or not hike any given weekend and still keep my edge.

Thank goodness we still have Adams 5, although it is less than a nothing of a peak...

Which car would you recommend for remote bushwhacking?

Couldn't agree with you more! To me, these mega extreme measures that some are willing to go through in order to avoid what would be a *very* easy road jog seems odd. Once the driving is no longer easy, you also risk hundreds or thousands of dollars in repairs if things go bad -- not to mention...

    Help/advice - "hiker car" needed??

Before anyone asks, I spend $250 a month on gas but actually am maintaining someone else's car too (which is the behemoth) and that car sucks up most of the gas in my monthly budget.

    Help/advice - "hiker car" needed??

I have been following this and have a few thoughts to add: My Corolla has had absolutely, positively NO issues with winter driving. In this car for 3 years now I have commuted to and from work daily, gone skiing and winter hiking on a very frequent basis and never have been in a situation where...

    Winter Bivy Thread

I highly recommend the OR bivys. Mine has held up very well, is waterproof - breathable (goretex). Only problem is condensation ... I always end up with some if I put the hood over my head.. One night I considered using a snorkel to vent my breath out but never followed thru. I have done (10 to...

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

I use my Asolo TPS 520s for 3.975 season hiking. Only on wicked cold days do I consider my insulated boots, even if going above TL in winter. I have about 300 miles on them - and it looks like I will get at least 300 more, with nothing but rave reviews from my feet so far. I had Vasque Wasatches...

    Canisters/bottles along Scar Ridge

The more often we talk about specific locations of canisters, the more quickly they seem to disappear.... My rule of thumb is to never expect to find one, that way I am pleasantly surprised if there is one. Also, sometimes they are not actually on the summit, so finding one does not mean you...

Question about Legal Sleeping in the Whites

Speaking of Chocorua, if you literally were to sleep on the rocks, how could you possibly do any damage? Just a foam pad and sleeping bag under the stars? If you didn't eat there, showed up after dark and woke up/ packed up at sunrise, I just don't see how you could do any harm or be an eyesore...

    Waterproof Maps

Despite Map Adventures making a far, far, far better map than the AMC ever could hope to, my favorite maps are free: just go to mapper.acme.com and you get a FULL screen sized topo of wherever you want to go ... but what makes it so good is you also get a precise overlay of satelite imagery...

    sleeping in your car

I usually sleep at Lafayette Place at the "Trailhead Parking" lot, but only if Haystack / Gale roads are closed or full ... have never had a problem. Usually see other cars with hikers doing the same thing - sometime many others. One time a ranger drove by and snooped around at the Great Gulf...

Woman flown off Denali after refusing to climb any farther

Very good points. I think the "nanny" burden could instantly be removed from the rangers by also requiring a full release be signed along with the access fee. By letting this fool get away with no fine being paid, they have taken a bad precedent and made it even worse. I think they should NOT...

Baxter State Park - Day use Parking Permits

No, but given the distance it is from where most people live, most people feel the need to really plan a Baxter trip out. Waiting for a perfect weather day is certainly a concern as well, if you are there for the week and have that luxury. I was only able to hike it on a very cloudy day and I am...

    boardwalk traction

I agree, this is a problem. I mean, nobody in their right mind steps on a wet root or log when hiking... but you are supposed to step on wet log bridges and not expect to slip? The criss crosses do make it a lot better and this retrofit could be done without replacing a single board.

    Pemi Wilderness Bridge Removal Project

Let's just say I am against the blast overs by top gun and company. I also find it shameful that the cog rr is allowed to blast those insanely loud horns from the summit .. I mean you can hear them from 5 miles away (in a wilderness area). I also wish the auto road would not allow those...

    Mount Washington Auto Road

If they are so worried about profits, then just ask for permission to go at night, when the road is closed anyway.

    Pemi Wilderness Bridge Removal Project

Maybe my specific life experiences are unique, but I seem to be one of the few happy to see the bridge go. Or maybe I never got that memo stating that hiking should be as easy as possible. Heaven forbid people are forced to PLAN beforehand or THINK during a hike, but hopefully this bridge coming...

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

Do I believe Yuppie 911 is a bad thing? Yes! Is there anything we can do about the situation? Not really... I think it truly cheapens the whole outdoor experience for the rest of us when some bozo calls in a chopper when their latte goes tepid. This hypothetical case is obviously an extreme...

The Best Views Of Washington Are From Pierce

Yes Iso's one of my very favorite 4000 footers! And every time I have been there I have had the full view ... that's part of why I decided to cancel my trip there today. I can't imagine going there if the view is erased. I like Davis more though because being a little more back gives a better...
