How often do you wash your clothing and gear?

I believe that washing stuff probably does more damage than the average hike (unless you have a front loading washer) so why cut your gear's life expectancy in half? I only wash stuff that stinks... socks, underwear, shirt. Fleece usually not very often but since it's durable I will do worry...

Ok, now I remember. It was funny I said I was definitely not going to descend the Flume Slide in winter.... kind of like the time I said I was just looking at a new car and bought it in the end. I actually thought Pine Bend Brook was harder to descend when we did it a few weeks ago... it was...

    Study: Northeast winters warming fast

I saw the same statement about the mercury in coal a while back. I'd like to see if it was accurate. As for disposal, Home Depot will recycle them. http://www6.homedepot.com/ecooptions/pdf/CFL-RecyclingProgramRevised.pdf

    REI dividends should be arriving..

I hear ya. I can only buy $85 of stuff with that dividend at REI. Say at ebay I can make the money go a sssoooo much further. This wicked nice Lowe Alpine fleece jacket I have that everyone likes... I stole it off of ebay for $20 bucks! Retailed for way over $100. I only buy retail if something...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

Many great points by all. I think that wind power is important and can be part of the solution. A better feasible alternative is solar. And before you say solar only works in the Arizona or something, check out the Maine solar house: http://www.solarhouse.com. Back to wind - yes it has flaws...

Old News? – Updated Index for WMG (28th edition)

I could not believe this either when I got my new book last year. This was so annoying, I simply went back to my old (1992) edition instead. I may have actually given my new one away as it is useless without the bolds ... oh well. Looks like I will be using little gray for another decade...

Missing Massachusetts Hiker located and safe

B the Hiker: great, great points! Trish, I also think you have a good point about big groups: I don't like being in them. I personally prefer 3 people in a group but feel 2 is also a good number. I have never yet even considered soloing in winter or on a bushwhack, but feel fine when I do solo...

    Here-We-Go-Again Heavy Snow Warning 2/22-23

I can only imagine that trail breaking is not much different. My Wednesday trip the S pres keeps looking like fewer and fewer peaks will be reached. It may take a superhuman effort just to reach Jackson :):)

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

The intermittent nature of solar and wind power is a problem, but this can be compensated for. Another gripe by anti- wind or solar types is that the power may come at times of low demand. The solution to both of these problems is the same, although possibly the solution will only ruffle even...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

I agree. It seems best to put them as close to where (lots of) people are if possible. The new one in Newburyport is pretty cool. I saw it running on Friday and the thing is at ground level... no wind. Flags were barely moving on a flagpole 20 feet up. But that bad boy was really turning...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

I think about this a lot every time I am hiking. It would *really* stink to see these in the Whites, but consider how the summit of Washington has been utterly and completely destroyed. This was done mainly for (high impact) tourism and yes there is the observatory and its scientific mission...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

Good point, I cannot back it up. I should have said over the years many people I have met have complained about the rules encountered in wildernesses. They think it is a silly notion and that the rules are inconvenient. I personally like the idea of a lower standard of trail maintenance and...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

I feel the need to revive this old thread because it was so much fun to read. Maybe we can get some more, new opinions here. I encountered so many good viewpoints from reading all of this and it made me think about wilderness and what it really means. A lot of people seem to see the wilderness...

    Mt. Guyot

I have seen the clean prom listed at exactly 160 feet, but errors of at least a foot are almost guaranteed, so inclusion can be argued either way endlessly. Others have said that since many people hike it anyways (only if they are going long haul- though) it would be no biggie to add it. I think...
