Coolest 4K Peak Name in Northeast

Katahdin, definitely and absolutely. It's not just a name, but a calling. You can't say that about many other peaks in the Northeast... and the name sounds cool! Zealand is my second favorite.

    Google My Maps

What a fantastic idea! The problem is I do not have a GPS but I am sure I could print out the map anyways for my use. It stinks that because I don't have one I cannot contribute to the list...

No, I did not climb Lincoln’s Throat Slide in winter!

I got talked into this route up Osceola this past October. It was very much worth it - and it was the best hike of all of last year! We had to contend with some ice and it was juuust to the point of needing crampons (looking back I should have used them) but we passed by okay. I was absolutely...

    Solar Eclipse

2024 will go directly over Katahdin! Can you imagine a better setting than the knife edge anywhere on the Earth? The answer is no. Don't forget to bring those special glasses, though, or it may be your last sight.

Wildcat - accessing via ski area?

It's a pain to carry all the stuff up, but I think the best way to go is snowshoe up on the hiking trail, alpine ski down (now you don't have to take the green circle and will be down in about 5 minutes). I did this at Tecumseh and was a blast - next up, Cannon.

Kinsman Ridge tr. conditions - Cannonballs section?

This info may be of little use but I would like to let you now that late last April, this section was still tough. It really appears to get almost no use in the winter between the Pond and NE Cannonball because all the peakbaggers out there are just wetting their pants to climb the Kinsmans or...

So What's The Coldest You Ever Been Out In?

-20 once skiing at Cannon, it hurt a lot to go fast that day. Hiking I think only 5 below or so. I am more worried about my car not starting when it's cold out then I am of getting a chill because I always carry enough gear, some would say too much.

How much do you really drink on a winter hike?

There is no reason to doubt it varies widely by person. I usually drink, say, a gallon on a hike and my friend Evan will have less than a quart. He is not even thirsty but I could actually still drink more. It has a lot to do with how much you sweat, and I always sweat. Even down to zero degrees...

    Snowshoe vs barebooting

Good to hear a lot of different viewpoints, many of which had valid points. I am not in favor of regulations or rules, that makes hiking more like the daily world we all strive to escape temporarily. There are conditions when snowshoes are not the best choice - when this happens you should take...

    Snowshoe vs barebooting

I have always worn my snowshoes rather than carried them even when the trail was well-packed. I do this because strapping them to my pack is a pain and I enjoy wearing them anyways. I have heard from some people that it is bad form to bareboot because it basically ruins the trail. After seeing...

    sharing camp sites

What I have gathered from reading all of the posts seems to be that the couple basically posed an inconvenience in how they set up for the night. While I may or may not have said something to them, given that it really wasnt an emergency, the best thing is avoid rudeness. That's why we go to the...

    sharing camp sites

My take on these situations is most likely over simplified but guidelines on "etiquette" are out the window because this is not some gassy dinner with the queen of England - you're hiking. If you feel somebody is squandering a needed resource, just say so. However, during fair weather, a lean to...
