Does hiking help your body or break it down?

Years of bushwhacking at night with a pack probably played a role in the arthritis I now experience. And in keeping me sound in mind. :)

Insane deal TODAY ONLY on Madshus Annum skis (fka Karhu XCD Guide)

Insane JULY deal on Madshus Annum skis (fka Karhu XCD Guide) Sierra Trading Post has a one-day 70% off deal that I just used on a pair of Madshus Annums that were already marked down. These were formerly marketed in the U.S. as the Karhu XCD Guide. In a week I'll have a top-rated pair of...

    Lightroom - older version question

My wife runs 5 on her Mac and says the subscription is required only if you want to use a tablet and run their Creative Cloud feature. She does not, and the app functions fine as it is.

A bunch of rescues last weekend

This picture is why I became a dog handler and not a ground pounder. If you look closely, you can see their arms lengthening, while their teeth are slowly ground down and another part of their anatomy is constricting more or less involuntarily. ;)...

    Acadia pics by QT Luong

In addition to the quality of the work, I'm loving the fact that he drops a sheet of Velvia in that hulk.

calm paddling and camping opps in northern whites ?

Umbagog. And Umbagog. And, oh yeah, Umbagog. (But keep an eye on the wind.) These guys seem to have had a good time: Daredevil canoeists tempt fate on Umbagog Lake

Snoring and staying at an AMC hut advice?

Disclosure: I translated into English the first website that is linked below, but I have no other stake in the sale of sleep apn(o)ea splints. ;) You might wish to take a look at Current sleep apnoea splints and talk to your dentist about an oral appliance like these if you haven't. I know...

Laugavegur Trek, Iceland - Logistical questions

Why walk after the trek when you can ride? On a breed that is unique to the island and an essential part of its history – Icelandic horse tours I have no personal experience but you have enough time to find a good operator. And what will the swells in Beantown think when you casually mention it...

Outside Magazine's 20 most dangerous hikes

Indeed. Haven't climbed it, but I was camped for several days in front of it. And I do believe this guy would second its nomination for the list: Fort Collins hiker, Daniel Palmer, describes harrowing Capitol Peak ordeal

Outside Magazine's 20 most dangerous hikes

I did one of my SAR dog handler certifications among the lush greenery of #19. At the time it had yet to acquire its now notorious reputation. :D With bear attacks, is popular Anchorage trail overdue for overhaul?

    A 'smarter' campsite

Number 5 has a use That Dares Not Speak Its Name, at least at airports. Imagine your middle finger inserted through the large hole with the prongs pointing out. And yes, there are people telling TSA agents it's just a dining utensil ... To clarify: I'm not one of those carrying it on board...

    Missing hiker

Personally I can't imagine ever signing some log book in the woods. I've spent a lot of time looking for lost folks. Leaving a trip plan is something I do and encourage, but signing a log book is antithetical to the experience I'm seeking. YMMV.

Any worry of bears in White Mountains

There are bears everywhere in New Hampshire there are trees. And then some, occasionally. I'll repeat what I just said in another thread: The last person killed by a bear in New Hampshire died while the Articles of Confederation still governed this country. (For you folks who have forgotten...

    Guns on the trail

The last person killed by a bear in New Hampshire died while the Articles of Confederation still governed this country. (For you folks who have forgotten why it was necessary to have a stronger federal government than the Articles provided for, this was back in 1784.) Fish and Game has some...

    Tuckermans Inferno this weekend

When you're walking south from Wildcat, watch for the north end of the Pinkham parking lot. Climb over the bank and look for a garage capable of concealing the snow rangers' tracked dragon. Follow the dragon's tracks upward to the trail. You'll know you've arrived at the trail when you start...

Lowa makes several higher styles. I have a special version (no longer sold) of their Hunter Extreme that is ten inches high, relatively light in weight and very comfortable (as are all Lowa products). You might look at the current version and at the different versions of their Tibet: Lowa men's...
