Joe Comuzzi finishes his 12x48 on Jackson

First of all, congratulations Joe! Secondly (for the record), I have NOT completed the NH48 x 12. I am not even actively working on this list. I just hike a lot in the Whites and have been doing it for so long that I am now about 75-80% of the way there... I imagine that when I get near the end...

Redlining Contest to Precede Trip Report

I have an slight unfair advantage seeing that I know you, but I will take a guess anyway... :) Since your a trail adopter on Moosilauke, you must have hiked this peak over 14 times. I know you have done pretty much everything in the Pemi, so I'll rule that out. I know you are almost done...

Who are the legends of the New England mountains?

IMO, a White Mountain "Legend" is not someone who hikes for personal ambitions, but is for people who have changed the mountains in some way... Anyone who puts my name into this mix either doesn't know me, or is smoking something probably quite good... People like the Crawford's...

    Sawyer Pond ?

It has both a shelter and tent platforms I was there on July 7th just passing thru after whackin' down to Sawyer Pond from the col between Tremont and Owl's Cliff. The mosquitoes were so bad that I had to put on my Gortex jacket and pants with my hood bound tightly around my face to expose as...

Katahdin - Hamlin Peak - From Fear to Joy - 9/25/07

Well done! That is one well written trip report and your 1st and last paragraphs are quite profound... Isn't hiking great for the soul??? Sure beats chicken soup... :D

Farewell to Bill Bowden Outdoorsman, Wuss Formerly Known as Bushwack Bill, 9/29/07

Sad news indeed... I unfortunately never met him, but have seen his name in many canisters and in lots of AMC Outdoors magazines... His posts here were always extremely informative and he was an inspiring member of this community. This was a huge loss... My condolences to his family...

Andy Skurka closing in on new 6850-mile hiking route

Awesome trek! He wasn't kidding when he said he wanted to do the most scenic backpack trip possible in the lower 48. Nothing more scenic than combining most of the Colorado Divide and Pacific Crest trails into a loop :) Looks like he even did part of the border swath with Canada. What an...

    The Hancocks 2007-09-22

Nice TR! I think I might have passed you guys as I was heading down the Hancocks around 7:30am Sunday morning. I was hiking solo with my dog Madison (a Golden Retriever), when we passed by a campsite with a dog that ran playfully after my dog. This was just above the "LARGE" campsite that...

Let's Talk About Disgusting Back Sores

The lower part of your back looks like friction from your pack being too loose (I have had the same problem in the past). The upper part of your back looks like the words "WILLY". I'd see a priest for that one... Overall, it looks like your pack is moving too much when you hike. I...

New book on White Mountains - any input?

Warning, "late reply" :D I picked up part 1 about 10 days ago, and due to time restraints I have only been able to read about 1/2 of the book. All I have to say is that it's very fascinating! It's a great snapshot of time with familiar places. These people were doing what we do, only with...

Timmus 48s aka Moosilauke Cocktail Party

Congratulations!!!! Too bad I was travelling on business, because I missed a fun one. How many hikes end up with a cocktail party on the summit??? Very creative! :) Nothing like finishing "in style"... Can't wait for for the 115 finish. Hopefully you come up with another cool theme like...

    Where Would You Live?

Awesome question! Three places that I can definitely see myself living someday are: :) Glenwood Springs, Colorado Bend, Oregon, Killarny, Ireland The places that I will NEVER live (or even be buried at) :D El Paso, Texas Newark, New Jersey Utica, New York From what I have seen of this...

The 48 Direttissima - in progress update

Congratulations! Nice job with completing the 48 old school! Did your wife recognize you? :D You will probably still continue to loose weight for another day or 2. Your metabolism has gone haywire... Looking forward to the whole trip report! btw, that mouse you kept seeing is Mr. Jingles

    Gloves for Half-Dome Cables

I also did this hike with no gloves back in 2003 (and I have girly non-calloused hands) :D The cables are 1" dia steel woven and are pretty easy to grip with bare hands. Wearing gloves would certainly make it easier (and keep your hands cleaner, and callous free) :) The problem I had with...

    North and South Weeks

The York Pond Trail and the trail head are on WMNF land, so there are no issues of private land access. I think you are getting this confused with the access to the Mt. Cabot Trail, which does pass thru several private areas, one of which is still a problem.

Ditching the Franconia Ridge for the Bonds 9/2/07

Cool trip report and pics! I must have been just slightly ahead of you, because I was on Bond as the sun was setting. I made it down over Bondcliff to treeline before I needed my head lamp. I bet I was less than a mile ahead of you. :) It would have been cool to run into you 2. So far that...

Enjoyed a 6pack over the long weekend...

Nice job! Now that was a weekend of hiking! :) As far as E. Kennebago goes, you must have went in past the yellow boundary blazes otherwise you would have at least passed thru them. They are bright yellow and are on every tree 30 feet apart.

The 48 Direttissima - in progress update

Yesterday, I set off on a scouting mission to meet up and hike with Mats for part of his Pemi leg of the trek. After talking to Dr. D, I knew they were somewhere between Owl’s Head and the Twins. After climbing Owl’s Head (little did I know that they were on the summit only 3-1/2 hours before...

Boston Globe article on Mt Washington hiking

A little discrepency I noticed: Cog Railway Ticket Info Line 11 states: "One-way tickets are sold from the top only and are subject to space availability". Maybe their website is wrong, but it seems to imply that one way tickets down can not be purchased in advance. The reason...
