    Alaska Range and Denali - Chapters 6 & 7

I took the six day course. If I had it to do over again I would have taken the 12 day. There is a lot to cover and we were busy from the moment we got up until we zipped up our bags at night. The 12 day course does more climbing and travelling since there is more time available. The 6 day...

    Alaska Range and Denali - Chapters 6 & 7

Photo link: http://community.webshots.com/user/kzklimber This is a continuation of the trip report I started on a previous thread. Chapter 6 – “Hide & Go Seek” After a restful night, even though my feet were slightly higher than my head, we woke to warm, soft snow conditions at 3 AM. The...

    Alaska Range

I thought the Alaska Range was more awe inspiring than the Alps. Although the Alps are more beautiful with the lush green valleys surrounded by snowy peaks, the sheer size and ruggedness of the Alaska Range makes the Alps seem like a bunch of little hills. I can only imagine what the Himalaya...

Alaska Range Trip Report -Chapter 1

I just keep posting as I write it up. Probably take 2-3 more posts. It is helping me deal with the "letdown" after finishing this fantastic trip I had planned for a long time.

Alaska Range Trip Report -Chapter 1

Chapter 5 "High Camp" Following breakfast we broke down the tents, packed our packs and sleds, and roped up for a trip up the glacier to a higher camp. I was excited to be climbing again. I was on the first rope team with my tentmate, who runs marathons. Needless to say, the instructor kept...

Alaska Range Trip Report -Chapter 1

Chapter 4 - First (and only) Summit We all roped up and were leaving camp shortly after 5AM, totally enveloped in a cloud. A light mist soaked our outer layers. We returned to the ridgeline and put on crampons for a lesson in “French Technique”. Following this, we once again headed for the...

Alaska Range Trip Report -Chapter 1

Chapter 3 - What Crevasse? The instructors asked everyone to be up by 6AM to get an early start on the day. I took my “morning shower” using personal wipes and wiggled into my clothes and out of the bag at about 5, since sleep was no longer a possibility. I had been warm and comfortable all...

Alaska Range Trip Report -Chapter 1

Alaska Range Trip Report - Chapter 2 Chapter 2 – “Skis Down” Shortly after takeoff the mountains came into view. It was a rare clear day and the initial view of the size and height of the Alaska Range gave me chills. Denali is enormous and dwarfs the surrounding terrain. As we flew closer...

    Alaska Range

Rick; There was about a 1 week period where nobody summitted about a week ago, teams were stuck at 17 for 5-7 days because of high winds and storms. A group came back in to AMS while we were packing up to leave for the mountains and they looked pretty beat up and releived to be off the...

    "Virus-laden poo"

CMC's are a good thing!! I just returned from 6 days in the Alaska Range and was issued a CMC by NPS. It is not unlike a bear cannister with a screw top and a small foam "doughnut" that fits around to top of the container to act as a toilet seat. It was much more comfortable than trying to...

Moose sighting in Saratoga County NY

I was much surprised to find a moose standing alongside Lake Rd in Ballston Lake about 0630 Monday morning (Memorial Day) as I was heading up to the ADKs for a day of hiking. The moose was relatively small ( on the moose scale) and had no rack - perhaps an young adult venturing out on its own...

    Hope for High Alt. Rescue...

Does anyone else think this was a foolish stunt that risked littering the summit of the world's highest peak with wreckage forever???? I can see taking such risks for a rescue mission lower on the mountain - but not to put the aircraft or a passenger on top.

Which Spring Hike is more crazy: Sanatonis or Allen?

The Bradley Pond trail never drys out!!!!! Failed attempts to summit Santanoni, Panther, and Couchsachraga all in1 day are much more common than failed attempts to do Allen in a day.

    Denali deaths

Training options for Denali I am enrolled in the Alaska Mountaineering School 6 day Mountaineering course starting June 10. The cost is much less than a guided summit trip ($1300 for 6 days oon the mountain including Air Shuttle to/from the Kahiltna) and includes at least 1 summit attempt on...
