    VFTT Secret Sign

I've found that asking "are you a vfter?" works if you are talking to a vftter, because they usally ask " did you mean vftt?" If not , they just look at you funny and move on. Sometimes , I'll ask or comment about a view from the top, usally just a yes or no for an answer, a couple of times...

    Lake Durant State campground -ADKs

I'm headed into the Moose River Area over Labor Day weekend. Several areas to kayak, Wakely Mt. to climb, as well as trails to lakes and ponds. Camping is free thoughout the area at roadside sites. Several lakes have trails which are suitable for wheeled carriers, and legal sites to camp on the...

Which hiking season is your drug of choice?

I don't work alot in the winter so I can hike or ski almost any day. Also no bugs, no rocks, roots and branches to trip you up. Less people on the trails and mountains. No bears or critters trying to eat your food either.

Mass. Hiker Rescued in King Ravine

Steve, Thanks for thanking the rescue team. So often this simple gesture is overlooked .(No I was not involved, and have no idea who was or even where it took place.) It just means alot to some of us unpaid volunteers.

    What should I have done?

A simple "I think I'm going to be sick" always gets me out of the way.

    Kayaking on the Delaware

Another little kayaked, full of wildlife,(eagles osprey, beaver, otter,) is the upper Delaware Rivers, the West and East Branches above the Prepactacton and Cannonville Res.. We do these in mid spring when the water level permits. Because they are small, you can sometimes float right beneath...

    got orange? / hunting season

Being a hunter and a hiker, I agree with blaze orange, it stands out. They even make a blaze orange camo. Red checkered coats are more or less camo, they blend in. A steady hiking pace is more noticable to both animals and hunters than a slow, stop and go movement, which is like a sneaking...

    Poll - Do you bushwhack?

Here in the cats , we have lots of good bushwacks, many of the 35, plus most of the others over 3000'. No cairns, no herd paths on many. You really need map and compass skills, Winter is the most fun.

    Day Hike vs. Overnight Backpack...

Summer day hiking with a 10-15lb. pack, i figure 2.5+mph is an average speed. With a 30-35lb pack this drops to 2mph. or less. In the winter, day hiking with a 20-25 lb pack, snow shoes, again under 2mph. As a rule of thumb, i plan on 2mph for summer day hikes, with lunch, breaks for views...

    Items stolen out of camp?

I've never had anything taken while backpacking , but once, a long time ago, while hiking in the Redwoods in Ca., we stayed in an out of the way car campsite for the showers one night , and were acused by the car campers of robbing them. Everthing from coolers to stoves. The park rangers...

    High Altitude Apples

What I'm asking about are fruit trees not native to the area, such as apples, peaches, and so on. I've seen native fruits and berries(black cherry, mountain ash, blue or huckleberries as they are known locally, and others at higher elevations, but never a healthy, thriving apple at this height...

A tale of 3 Firetowers (Kane, Pillsbury, Wakely)

The last caretaker on wakley lives in a cabin (or did until recently) about where the deer were. Might have been him watching. He was later the ranger, caretaker for the moose river area. lots of good stories. It is quite a mess on top, all those 100# cylinders which were flown in. Talk about...

    Frankenpine approved by APA today

Why is it that when the state(NY) decides to enlarge a ski slope on wild lands , againist state constitutional rules, they just do it, destroying acres of wild land, creating scars on the landscape which are visible for miles, wasting energy with more snow making, adding more light, noise and air...

    Catskills Defoiliation

Good news, the supposedly tasty little buggers are now on the decline, entering the pupal stage. This means that everything you own will be covered with yellow or white cocoons. For the highly motivated and swift of hand , these can be woven into silk like socks ,underwear, pajamas and so forth...
