Reflections on list finishing (Cats 35)

Awh!!! Halcott, or "Hawkit" has its finer points: the ancient grove of Hemlocks, the gaint Ash, Maples and Oaks that are hidden about. The mysterious cairns that finally have meaning, several waterfalls, solitude, some great snowshoe skiing off one particular ridge, AND, it makes you really...

Going gluten free on a long hike

I almost starved when I became celiac, and allegeric to soy and milk.( the milk allergy went away after 6-8 months) Cross contamination is a big issue , so keeping it all GF is a good idea. Hormel has lots of GF food like pepperroni, and the dreaded spam for cold weather fats. Watch out for...

    Slide 12/13

No damage from ice storm. Trail is very wet and icy to 3600', (stream needed a big jump,) above that, hard pack and heavy ice flows. Barebooted up, insteps down. Met 2 coming over from Cornell/Witt and they wished they had crampons for the traverse. No one else out. Very clear, cold and windy...

A bad expierence in the woods today......

I've had 2 or 3 incidents where someone has mistakingly shot in my direction, once where the pellets bounced off my back.( I saw the idiot/friend raise his gun and I turned, covering my neck and head.). All "accidents". At least that is what they are called. I have also watched a hunter...

    Double Trouble? H&F do DoubleTop

The existing view is to the west of the summit, there is a view on the south peak along the state line. There are also views to the north just below the summit if you can climb the large erractic boulders.:)

best snow shoe in northern catskills?

What kind of hike or snowshoe are you looking for? As others have stated, the trailheads are usually plowed out quickly. Big Hlw is not a problem if you stay in the summer parking area below the trailhead parking, where it says NO PARKING SCHOOL BUS TURN AROUND,(there are no buses on week ends)...

    Basha Kill 10-13-08

The Basha's a great spot, I haven't been there since the early 70's when I searched those waters for the elusive Comely Shinner (and got paid for it!) Back then the DEC would poison or gill net large bodies of water in an attempt to eradicate some unwanted species. I hope this practice isn't...

    Otter behavior

I have heard of a large beaver attempting to drown a dog in a farm pond, but there were kits(baby beavers) involved. Otters are playful, but I'd take care if their young are involved. They are often in the Upper Upper East branch Delaware where I live. Lots of fun to watch, but a magnet for...

    Approaching Slide from the Neversink

Lone is a great peak, many strange things to be found and wondered at. Always keep your eyes open, enjoy the hike as well as the summit. However, Rocky is the heart and soul of the cats. :)

    Approaching Slide from the Neversink

The fishermans trail can be confusing, but just keep headed upstream, there are gray paint spotches covering red paint on the trees. One or 2 crossings if you follow closely. There is a red can top star at the cut off for Friday, a red heart at the Lone area was removed :( .A nice trip, about 12...
