    Imp Trail Views

We usually do these trips even earlier in April (6 patrols in different locations), it's good training on packing right and traveling right, as the wrong gear and horseplay on the trail will leave them uncomfortable (but not in danger) and wiser. This route is for our more seasoned Scouts as...

    Imp Trail Views

Thank you for noting this. I too was confusing the Stony Brook trail for the Imp trail. This is for sa group of older Boy Scouts as an overnighter and i want them to enjoy a good view. Stony Brook in and Imp trail out might be better than Moriah as I look at it now. The trip is planned for the...

Are there views along the Imp trail from Rt. 16 up th the Imp shelter, or do you have to get up to the ridge before getting a view?

    20 mile day hike suggestions?

I couldn't find any information on a guide permit on that site.

    20 mile day hike suggestions?

Thanks everyone for lots of suggestions. I'll do up some maps and profiles from Delorme's Topo program and put it to the guys. The group size would likely be under ten, but we're familiar with having to do the tour permits. I'm quite interested in knowing more about the Guide Permit as our...

    20 mile day hike suggestions?

I'm trying to find a 20+ mile hike in October in Maine or New Hampshire for a group of Scouts. Generally the boys have done a walk through Portland (sidewalks, yech!) for their 20 miler. I'd like to find something in the woods. A loop trail would be preferred, though a 10 mile that we go out and...

What have you found in the woods?

I regularly collect pack parts, silverware, tent stakes and other useful refuse from the trail. I have never bought a set of nesting eating utensils, but I have about 4 sets put together from trail finds.

    Funny Maine article about backpackers

And the citizens of Maine thank you. Compared to New Hampshire's White Mountains, Maine seems sparsely visited by hikers. More trails might bring more hikers, and with the trend moving away from backpacking and toward dayhiking, this could give some areas of the State a little economic shot in...

AT Hiker taken off Saddleback Mountain

There was a report in the Portland Press Herald about an AT Hiker who became ill on Saddleback. Does anyone know more details? http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/news/state/060713dispatches.shtml

    Campfire rings

Oh the tranquility of the glow of the evening embers. The scent of wood smoke is in every way to be preferred to the whiff of propane or petrol. I guess things are changing, and the woods are becoming a more mechanized place where only plastic, metal, and petroleum are considered "gentle"...

    Campfire rings

I was disapointed (no, annoyed actually) to find the campfire ring at Garfield obliterated last year. I experienced the same thing at Marcy Dam. Is this the general policy now, to actually eliminate a place to make a campfire at the shelters and tent sites in the Whites and Adirondacks? Life in...

    Found Objects

I "recycle" a lot of found bits and pieces I have about 5 complete nesting fork/knife/spoon sets I've found over the years as well as carabiners, straps, flashlights, etc. A lot of my repair parts are trail findings. Never leave something on the ground that might be useful.

    Backpacking/Camping Recipe Cookbooks

Backpackers cookbook I noticed that most of the recipoes came from "Backpacker's Cookbook" by Margaret Cross and Jean Fiske. I'm going to have to check that one out.

    Bad hiking gear purchase.

LL Bean tents are great! Okay, okay, I take back what I said. A couple of the LL Bean tents I've had experience with had bad zippers. :o Actually, I know some Bean tents are good (okay, Great!) and the company's customer service and return poilcy is fantastic (really, I mean it, honestly!)...

Any LL Bean tent. Their zippers are terrible, they do not last very long.

    Black Fly Season

We have Greenheads in our parts. They know well enough to stay out of your range of vision, so they attack you from behind or above. And they are persistent! I go to blackfly country to get away from them. ;-)

    LL Bean Cresta Leather Hikers

At Limmer they recommended "Tough Toe" to me, a very rugged, two part flexible epoxy made just for this purpose. I'll tell you in 10 years if it worked on my boots.

    "climb for the wrong reasons"

I set out 30 years ago to climb the White Mountain 4000 footers and the ADK 46, but then I found places that I fell in love with and visited over an over. I love the hike to Keene Valley from Big Slide over the Brothers, I have spent a dozen restful days watching the ravens on Phelps, many a...

    Catskillers; Platte Clove Rd open??

I don't think so, though they may have added some to what was there. They had mined a lot of stone out of there in '94 to line the "swimming hole" at their Rifton community.
