Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

How I have seen Wilderness Areas in the mountains of GA and than ones in the Whites, each one is managed how the district views the regulations differently. Not opposed letting each manager do what is best for each forest instead of a "blanket" policy that came from Washington.

    Packing / folding saws recommendations.

A few weeks ago I posted on local (GA) mt bike forum about what saw to carry. I already carry a small folding one but am interested in getting a larger one to carry when doing trail work. This one came up. http://www.silkysaws.com/Silky_Saws/Curved_2/Silky-ZUBAT-300-Hand-Saw

    River Otters in WMNF area?

I used to see them in the Millers River in Winchendon and Athol, MA. Right in the center of town. Also, I have spotted them swimming in the Augusta (GA) Canal. They are very comfortable living in city/towns. My suggestion is find a trail/old railroad bed near a river and take a...

Hiking in the winter with a Lab

Labs were originally breed by fishermen of the coast of Canada to retrieve lines. They (at least mine) love the water and cold. Have taken mine out in from single digits and up with no problems. I cannot recall if I have done hikes with her below zero. No jacket or booties for mine. Hardest...

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

I saw back a few years ago about a 4k club for the southern Appalachians to encourge hikers to more remote and less hiked peaks. Right in it they mentioned the idea came from AMC 4K club. One rule stuck out to me was all hikes had to be 4 miles (maybe 5) in lengh or longer to count. This was...

    Energy drinks.

I prefer some slightly watered down orange juice. As for snacks, jelly beans, sport gels and of course snickers. These work fine for me when I am mt biking (20-30 milers) Anything over that and I do need to stop for something more for food. always drinking just water also. I have used...

    Rescue Wagon

Problem we have is that the trail is 3' wide and sometimes less, in most areas. The local National Mt. Bike Patrol (which I am a member) have marked access points along the trail to fire roads and to some degree fire breaks and made maps for the local EMS to have in trucks.

    Rescue Wagon

I live very close to the Forks Area Trail System (FATS) in SC. It is a series of 35 miles of singletrack trails in 6 loops designed for mt biking. Very fun place to ride and trail run if you are ever in the Augusta, GA area. Do to the increase of accidents, the small local fire department...

White Mountain NF - Saco Ranger District - Trail Adopting

To use a chainsaw in a National Forest the person needs to be a certified USFS "Sawyer" on a side note: after relocating to the Augusta, GA area 6 years ago, I mentioned "trail adoption" to the local mt bike club. We now have all 150 miles of trail adopted.

    Lizards above 4000'

Could it of been a cavy or mara, looks like a large rabbit, and native to South America. There were sightings of them in the Sumter National Forest in SC close to where I live with even a few pictures in the paper. Story is they were released by the owner. Not believed to be breeding though...

    Lizards above 4000'

I don't believe there are any native lizards in NH. The only native lizard in New England I know of is the 5-line skink that is listed as a threatened species in CT and VT. I have plenty of these running around my house here in GA. http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?A=2723&Q=326006...

Stumbled across this article about the projected revenue that forests are to take in yearly in New Zealand and the sources of the revenue. Surprised that logging was in third place with walking and mt biking ahead of it...

Connecticut hiker carried off Appalachian Trail

I am glad that I rode alone 15 miles of trail tonight instead of hiked. I wouldn't want to be caught hiking alone, let alone out after dark:eek: Now am I allowed to trail run alone? it's not hiking right?

Hydrofracking for natural gas in Catskills

Just like clean wind power off the coast of the Cape, or a nuclear power plant, or a........ NIMBY. I personally would rather see this country actually come up with and do a plan to become energy independent. Just like Cape Wind, this is a possible way to start doing this. Also, my opinion...
