Hickory Knob, SC

Went and rode a few laps of Lake Side Trail, Hickory Knob State Park in McCormick SC. Trail is a 7.5 mile loop with most of it along the shores of Lake Thurman, the largest man made lake on the east coast. It is over 40 miles long with a few fingers that go back 5-20 miles off the main...

    "Trail Angels" documentary

I remember reading either here or at R.o.T. about a group of hikers that did a "taco bar" on Old Speck for thru, over night and day hikers alike. That just sounds awesome to hike around a corner and run into and am sure would be a blast to do for your fellow hiker.

    "Trail Angels" documentary

Watched on the Documentary Channel this past Friday "Trail Angels". Shows the unsung heroes of the AT and why they do it. Seemed to be more of the southern area, maybe Virginia. Could be wrong. Found it interesting. Not sure when it is on next...

Used to live about 4 miles away in Fitzwilliam and never knew the name of this peak or the one closer to 119. Needed to do a quick google map search. At first I thought there might be another Richmond. thanks. You could leave a note about the 81 cents at the 4 Corner Store. maybe one of the...

    Mt bikes in Wilderness Areas

Quote: August 15, 2011 by Scott Sandsberry YAKIMA, Wash. — Having spent three decades backpacking in the boonies, I’m a bit miserly about sharing the trails. When I’m enjoying the breeze in the trees many miles from the nearest road, I don’t much like encountering mountain bikers, motorcyclists...

    GPS or Map & Compass?

I agree here. I am a member of the National Mt. bike Patrol here in the Augusta, GA area. I carry maps but this is to show riders where they are. A lot of the trails have excess routes to them for trail work and rider evacuation. None of these are marked on maps.

    Are poles worth it?

Bought mine after a hike with my oldest of girl on my back. she shifted all of a sudden and i almost wiped out in a not so good spot. Three daughters later and many miles I have had no serious spills. Lucky for me I do not have them on my back anymore, sadly (or should I say, scared...

What do other people think about the new NG GMNF Maps?

I cannot say anything about the NG maps dealing with Vermont but I do enjoy the ones I have for the Georgia Mountains, The Smoky Mountains and Pisgah N.F in NC. one of the things I like about them is color coded trails designating trail use. IO will second the negative on mileage though.

    Describe your ideal guidebook...

More important to me is a good map. If it is with a guide it has to be a pull out. A map that has mileage on it, views, outlooks, water falls marked, what type of trail use (hikers, mt bikes, horses etc.) and it water proof. I find guide trail descriptions very widely from one guide to another.

What (or who) got you hiking?

Always was outside as a kid, we did a few family hikes when i was a kid. Remember when I first did Monadnock i wanted to be the one that carried the rope. just shy of 4 i didn't realize one wasn't required. When I was 10 the Boy Scout troop did a trip/hike of Washington. This troop was very...

    what isit?

I defense of Becca, her eyes are closed. My bets are she was "dared" to hike this way to catch her doing something wrong or embarrassing. That's my bet.

    Mount Washington perspective

One of my good friends posted a picture on FB on the summit of Washington. I gave him a hard time for not hiking but another person wrote this just after my comment. "FYI Mt Washington is my favorite illustration in Childbirth Class. The hikers do it naturally, the epidural people take the...

    "Flow" experiences while hiking ?

I have heard the term in the mt biking circles. http://www.hansrey.com/flowcountry.html a recent article in the Wall Street Journal (the "down hill" and "flow" are two different types of trails but the author uses the term down hill as flow)...

    Looking For Some Ideas

Before I moved from Fitzwilliam, NH to GA I hiked at least 2 times a week and many times more. Most of these were short hikes in the Monadnock area. I did other things like climbing, mt biking, skiing also but hiking was the main outside activity. When i moved, the trails and weather I felt...
