Real Food vs Processed : What do you bring on the trail ?

chicken fresh When I take a long hike I bring many of the normal things, trail mix, power bars, a couple of pieces of fresh fruit, freeze-dried dinners. The only thing I do different is bring a live chicken. I put a leash around it's neck and make it follow me. I bring an eggplant, some...

    It's debatable

The debate I finally had a chance to read the actual debate thanks to it's inclusion on this site. The bottom line the mountains are there for everyone who cares to climb them. The climbing must be responsible, as one poster stated, pick up any trash you see, avoid walking in single file...

    It's debatable

How Many will do it It is an answerable question, how many will do it because of the Other 54. Puma Concolor states, may be 40 or 50 have done the hundred highest. If one is concerned about environmental impact of hiking than take a look at the erosion caused by hikers in the high peak...

    Marcy to Gray herdpath

Across Gray to Marcy I must agree with many of the posts regarding Gray to Marcy, e.g. herdpath. I did this route two years ago, it was very thick, not very clear, and very hard to stay on rocks as one poster suggested. If we are not in disagreement about the damage casued to alpine plants by...

    Basin and Saddleback: winter

Looking for advice and suggestion regarding the two mountains cited. What is the best winter approach? Should they be done separately? Can one do both of them via Chicken Coop Brook? The rock face on the back side of Saddleback is pretty steep. Is there another approach from this side. Can...

    Katahdin Iron Works to Monson

Would like some information about this pending hike. We plan on going June 3rd or 4th, probably two days of walking. How bad is it from the Iron Works to Long Pond lean-to? Does it make more sense to stop near Lake Cloud and push oursevles the next day? Is there still snow cover in this...
