    Pee Etiquette question

Hi Tuck, I'm unaware of your BB protocol. Everyone I hike with heads off into the woods until they cannot be seen from the trail. That way you can dispense with the flagman role. In certain situations - a cloudy day in nondescript woods in level terrain - there is a slight chance, after...

Black Fly Schedule in the Whites

Karl, After twenty plus years of always hiking the Whites the weekend BEFORE Memorial Day weekend, not one blackfly bite to date. Occasionally, on warmer, sunny days we may pass through small clusters of the buggers but they're not chomping. Relax - have a great trip!

    Nylon vests

John, Most bigger bicycle shops or outdoor stores carry well designed shell (or wind) vests, a type I use for cycling, hiking and running. Neat thing is most have one or two big pockets on the back designed to carry water, snacks, etc. Could be just the ticket you are looking for.

Trying to plan Alpine Garden bloom hike...

Grandaddy, Having been up on the Gulfside between Jefferson and Clay on May 19th and seeing a few blooming diapensia, alpine azalea and lots of lapland rosebay (all early, especially the lapland), I'd say, this year, you'd be wise to aim for the first week of June.
