Class III trails in NE ?

Phil, you're right - the Eagle Slide in Giant's western cirque is Class 3 according to Don Mellor's 'Climbing in the Adirondacks', as is the (relatively) famous Trap Dike on Mt. Colden. Although technically they are not trails, fellow climbing company you are bound to experience on fair...

    achilles tendonitis

Besides the above recommendations, Giggy, I'd investigate getting orthotics. In fact, that's what I did two years ago when I couldn't shake mild, chronic, left leg achilles tendonitis (brought on by running) and, since getting them, I haven't had a recurrence. Cheers!

Hike with the wife - suggestions (Adk)

My favorite small hike in the area is Pitchoff, starting at the trailhead on rt. 73 just west of Upper Cascade Lake. Ascend and traverse as many of the micro peaks as you like, then return the same way. Many views along the way!

    jay peak recent info?

    jay peak recent info?

I've been keeping an eye on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's snowfall map for a number of years now. In the elevated regions of the northeast, there are two specific locations that receive significantly above average snow accumulations year in year out - the Tug Hill...

    Coreys vs. AMR Road

Pete, Whatchuya smokin'? No van and no mooning hunter that I can see. AMR road - never tire of those great patches of first growth that pepper that part of the reserve.

    Eastern approach to East Dix?

Sean, Besides the one described above, another popular 'whack up East Dix from the east is from Rt. 73 via the North, South Boquet valleys and up the East Dix slide. A good description of it is on 'Adirondack Journey', as you suspected, and which is now back up...

    Ausable Club

Here's a photo of the AMR signs posted on 'Views' in early Jan 2005 by 'arm'. Can anyone confirm these are the same signs that are there today? If so, there is no doubt skiing over the Ausable lakes by the general public is verboten.

    Help me identify this mountain

Based on the hill's apparent proximity to the lake, I'd say its the 2080 foot bump less than a mile to your south/south east on the eastern shore of Henderson.

    Wildflower Question

Matt, What you observed on Dix was likely alpine azalea (Losieleuria procumbens), one of the true arctic tundra plants that grow in the Adirondacks, and that's why it's stunted. I don't think it's related to laurel.

    Ultrahiking

Roses Above Treeline Arghman, Start sniffing around the Whites' Lakes of the Clouds hut at this time of year, Arghman - you'll go nose to tiny petal with the Dwarf Cinquefoil, a full fledged member of the Rose (Rosaceae) family....wayyy above treeline. Just don't walk on them; they're...

Most fun way up Mansfield at this time of the year?

Relax, Hikingfish! Went up this trail five years ago with a small group which included a not particularly fit 65 year old - he described the climb as "sweet". The google description you found is a pretty accurate, and, based on those ascents you made in the Dacks, I think you'll enjoy it...

King Ravine or Great Gully Trail?

Hi Woody 48, I have hiked the King Ravine trail 4 times over the past 17 years in mid May, each time ascending to Adams summit, encountering minimal ice and snow along the way. Although I've only climbed the Great Gully trail in summer, a few Mays ago, from Air Line, we watched three dudes...
