    Advice on Tackling Cabot

I came in from Mill Brook Rd (the Unknown Pond and Killkenny Ridge Trails) when I hiked it. It was a nice hike past Unknown Pond, then up past the Horn (a short side trip). I've never done the route from the fish hatchery nor have I tried the disputed Cabot Trail.

    What is Huntington's REALLY like?

I did this climb for the first time on July 26. I wore my rock climbing shoes from the top of the fan to the Alpine Garden Trail, which made it much easier. I have a lot of pictures too, but haven't gotten around posting them to my website (www.peakbagger-paul.com) yet.

plant phenology in the Presidentials (particularly Prenanthes), please PM

I was on the Huntington Ravine Trail last Thursday and took this picture. The leaves look like the ones you describe, but the flower petals don't look the same. Never-the-less, I'm no botanist, so I'll let you judge.

    Huntington Ravine question

I was pretty tired by the time I got up to the Alpine Garden, but after a short rest there, where I also changed back into my hiking boots, I was ready to go on. The going was much easier up the rest of the Huntington Ravine and Nelson Crag Trails, but I did stop a couple of times for a minute's...

    Slippery Rocks

Air Line vs Valley Way In general, I've found that the rocks on the Valley Way are more slick than those on the Airline. Being lower (following a valley), it attracts more moisture than the Airline which is up on a ridge. I don't know which trail you were on when it happened, but I always try...

    Huntington Ravine question

Finally made the climb I finally made the climb up Huntington Ravine yesterday. The weather was sunny and hot and the ledges were dry except for a few spots where water was trickling down. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I did bring my rock climbing shoes which I changed into right...

    Dry River crossing this weekend?

Dry River The Dry River does tend to flood badly, so it's hard to say. The Mt Eisenhower crossing, however, may far enough upstream that it won't be a real problem. As I remember it, the river is was not all that wide at the Eisenhower Trail crossing, but it was dry when I was last there. You...

    Owlshead from Galehead Hut

Lincoln Brook Trail I have also hiked the Lincoln Brook Trail between Owl's Head and 13 Falls, but it was now 6 years ago. It was definitely hard to follow, and it didn't help that a thunderstorm began just I came down from Owl's Head. I missed a brook crossing and went in circles for a while...

Zealand Hut & Road - a few quick questions

Zealand and Lincoln Woods parking I've never personally seen either of these lots completely full, but I've seen Lincoln Woods reasonably packed on hot summer days when a lot of people head to Franconia Falls. Still, I wouldn't expect parking to be a real problem. If you're doing an overnight...

Difficult Peaks in the NH 48

Hardest peaks - it's all relative A lot depends on the route you choose to climb. I personally enjoyed Isolation, but hiked it the long way (up the Crawford Path and Mizpah Cutoff, down the Mt Clinton Trail and Dry River Cutoff, camped near the Dry River, and then took the Isolation and Davis...

    Huntington Ravine question

Thanks Thanks for the responses and advice. One more question. Do the Huntington ravine ledges dry out quickly after rain? I'm thinking of going tomorrow, and the weather is supposed to be good then, but it's raining today. Also, in response to the person who said that people ought to get...

    Huntington Ravine question

I'm thinking about climbing up the Huntington Ravine trail later this week if the weather's good. I've been up King Ravine. Is Huntington really that much harder? Also, would it be worthwhile to bring my rock climbing shoes or approach shoes for the steep section instead of just wearing my...

    Franconia Ridge Trail Question

Does anyone know whether the Franconia Ridge Trail between Little Haystack and the Liberty Spring Trail is likely to be broken out, or is it pretty much unused in the winter? Thanks.

    Oliverian Brook Trailhead Question

Water conditions on Kate Sleeper Trail - question

Does anyone know if there is reliable water this year along the Kate Sleeper Trail where it meets the Downes Brook Trail. If not, how about anyone in the Passaconway or Whiteface areas? Thanks for any information.

    Humphrey's Peak AZ

Until your post, I thought that I was the only one around here who's climbed Humphreys. It was in June. As I remember, the trail leaves a parking lot well below the ski area, climbs up through a meadow, then enters the woods. Unlike most of the trails in the White Mountains, it had plenty of...
