Outings for the last few weekends of the winter season

A small group of us are headed to Mt. Bond on Saturday from the Kanc. Meet at the parking lot at 6:30, boots on the trail shortly thereafter. There are three of us that need it for our winter Trailwrights list. Experienced winter hikers are welcome to join us.

    Starr King and Waumbek (1-6-13)

It was a true winter wonderland in the upper elevations in the softwoods, especially between the peaks. Inevitably with views like that, when I get back, I wish I’d taken more pictures. Thanks again for organizing this hike Scott. It was a great time. Bruce

    Winter Boots for Wide Feet?

With a 14AA, I fall on the other end of the width spectrum. There are no of-the-shelf winter hiking boots available in that size. This was discussed with Limmer and Sons who offered to make an insulated winter leather boot with closed-cell foam. There was a year and a half wait at that time...

    Trailwrights list in one winter?

Other than the (3) work outings that must be with the Trailwrights on a scheduled work day, the website is silent as to in which state the remaining hours to be worked need to be located. Trailwrights is a NH based organization and TW scheduled work days are typically in NH. However, many TW...

    Work day Mt.Pemigewasset Sat. Aug.18th.

Pemigewasset Trail Work Day Hi Chris, Welcome to VFTT. We had a very productive day making needed improvements to Gene's adopted trail. About eight of us worked on four areas as follows: there were log bridges over each of two drains for spring runoff that were in various stages of...

NH Trails Day. Mt. Kinsman Trail July 21, 2012

Cooperative Effort on Mt. Kinsman Trail It was a great day with a cooperative effort by a group of 17 volunteers, including members of Trailwrights, trail adopters, as well as members of the USFS Pemi District, working hard to control erosion and to make the trail a more enjoyable hiking...

Saturday July 21 - NH Trails Day - Mt. Kinsman Trail, Easton, NH

Trailwrights, in collaboration and partnership with the US Forest Service, will be conducting a hands-on workshop for Level 2 maintenance, the level beyond that required of USFS trail adopters. Madison & J.Q. Adams

Saturday, 2-13-2010 Valley Way and Osgood trails well packed out with blowdowns on Valley Way easily avoided. Wore microspikes to about a quarter mile below tree line then changed to crampons for both peaks. The summits were in the clouds initially but the sun broke through just before we hit...

Lafayette -4th time is a charm!!!

Congrats on another winter peak, Bob, you and Glenn clearly had the day for it, a better day in winter than I've had on that ridge. Great pics too.

    Packn’ in the Presi’s – 2/16 - 2/18

Thoroughly enjoyed the TR, Craig. Awesome photos. Talk about a room with a view and cooperative weather as well. And at an affordable price too. Perhaps one day I'll work up my nerve to camp up there in winter. You clearly have been busy since the WHS'05.

    The Skook

Yes, excellent company on a great day to be out there. This was the first trip up the Skook for any of us. This is clearly the road less traveled and surprisingly so, as noted above, this route has a lot to commend it. As I look back on prior hikes, this is one of the very few times, perhaps...

    Goggle fog

balaclava to try I've used a balaclava with some success in cold, windy, above tree line situations that contains a foam pad that fits in the nose piece straddling the nose preventing exhaled air from going up through to the goggles. Additionally, there is a module (thermal conversion) through...

Going gluten free on a long hike

Gluten Free food sources This is one issue that has motivated me to post. I've not met other hikers with gluten intolerance even though I'd suspected they were out there. I've found the previous posts to be quite informative with new sources of GF food and look forward to trying them. In...

    Super Bow(l) Sunday, My W48 Finale! -- 2/3/08

A hearty congratulations to you Ross. Well Done. Enjoyed reading your trip report. Judging from the pics, the VFTT may not have been much. At least the wind had moderated considerably from Saturday. My son Tom, GlennS and I did the Whiteface - Passaconaway loop the day before, glad to be in...

    Stylin' on Moosilauke 3.18.07

Congrats again MT. A memorable ending to your quest for the NH 48s. Enjoyed reading the trip report and great pictures as well. Had a grand time hiking with the group and can now put a face to many of the names seen on the VFTT posts. One hopes we will hike together again. All the best!
