    Untreated Ethan Pond Water?

If I buy a contaminated pizza and I get sick, I can go to the hospital if necessary. If I'm in the backcountry and I get sick, I could be in serious trouble or exceptionally miserable. I won't be able to run to the store to buy some Pedialyte, or Immodium, or medicated wipes for the ensuing...

This may help with my terrible sense of direction

Nothing at all. It just sounds like an interesting gadget, but not really practical. Plus, something buzzing on my ankle would probably just annoy the hell out of me. I use GPS or good old fashioned compass when I'm off trail. I tend to get lost when I'm NOT in the woods

This may help with my terrible sense of direction

http://hplusmagazine.com/articles/enhanced/my-new-sense-organ From the link: "My new sensory organ is a small anklet strap with a LiPo battery and circuit board attached to an electronic compass on the anklet’s side. Inside the strap are eight small buzzers, up against my skin. As I sit here...

    Study: Northeast winters warming fast

But, I was just about to print out all 430 pages of whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2010/assets/spec.pdf :p I've only made a couple of posts, but its clear that this isn't going anywhere productive. Sorry about the tinfoil hat remark. It was meant to be humor, albeit at somebody else's expense...

    Study: Northeast winters warming fast

I did read your post. Did you take a look at the references you spoke so highly of? Wow. The tinfoil hat is a little too tight tonight, eh? EDIT: I don't claim the guy is evil, so, the puppy-kicking comment is a pretty silly distraction. Also, I'm not nit-picking, so the "grammatical...

    Study: Northeast winters warming fast

The article seems to rely pretty heavily on references to Stephen McIntyre, of climateaudit.org. As a former employee of gas/oil exploration companies (CGX Resources, see page 13 of this PDF: http://cgxenergy.ca/investors/CGX_AR03_part2.pdf), I don't consider him an objective party. There are...

    Untreated Ethan Pond Water?

I guess I didn't make my point clear, but it was an attempt to reassure wromanow. I've consumed plenty of untreated water on the trail and I have never fallen ill. The only time I DID get sick, was off the trail. Of course that does not mean that somebody else would have the same experience...

    Untreated Ethan Pond Water?

I can vouch for that one. My wife is a preschool teacher, and brought it home from school once. Wow. I mean, just, wow. What a great way to clear your GI tract. I've never caught it on the trail though. OK, the latter makes sense but the former, I just don't want to know.

Hip labral tear/Arthroscopic surgery/Can anyone relate?

I have no experience with this particular injury, but I've had three knee surgeries (same knee . . . stupid ACL :) ), and one shoulder surgery (torn labrum), and I'm still going strong. Well, "strongish" . . . but no fault of my injuries . . . the blame lies squarely with good beer and my...

hehe, thanks for the greenie :) I left out the best part of that story . . . flicking the whole mess off to the side of the trail with a long stick. I suppose the responsible thing to do would have been to bury it, but I draw the line at burying other people's poo. Getting it off the treadway...

Why are there more bee and wasp stings this summer?

We had to move my daughter's birthday party indoors today, due to the wasps. They were swarming like CRAZY, and I got stung between my fingers. I can't remember the last time I was stung, but it's been many years. Bring on the snow!

Do you take painkillers, ibuprofen, etc. when hiking?

I never take anything before or during a hike. Lately I've been taking 4 x 200mg Ibuprofen after most hikes right before I go to bed, and again in the morning. It isn't for the usual muscle aches and pains after vigorous exercise (I can usually ignore that), but for previous injuries that have...

    Kids climbing the Seven Summits...

I don't like it, but I'm not his dad. That being said, things could be worse; he could be stuck on the couch playing video games, ingesting loads of junk food, well on his way to type II diabetes.
