Isolation via Rocky Branch Trail 2/8/10

Good question. If Dr. D. followed my tracks all the way, I'm curious as to what route that was. It was my first time up Isolation, and although I knew of and was hoping to find E or F, I really didn't know which route I was using. Well, I knew it wasn't the earlier b/w, but I didn't know if...

Isolation via Rocky Branch Trail 2/8/10

There were places where the tracks were very obvious, but nearby the wind had erased them. My eye for spotting the almost erased tracks got better as the day went on, but I was still having trouble with fogging glasses and sunglasses.

Isolation via Rocky Branch Trail 2/8/10

Late start: 12:10PM! Trail to Height of Land well packed. Also well packed beyond HoL, but after a while, it turned right to head directly for a crossing point of Rocky Branch. The most recent, and only visible tracks turned right rather than following the trail down to the flowing body of...

Isolation via Rocky Branch Trail 2/8/10

Summary: Snowshoes required. No other traction needed. The one major stream crossing had a sturdy ice bridge. Don't follow most recent tracks (mine) much above the crossing if you think you know a better way! See full trip report in TR section.

Owls Head via Black Pond & Brutus Bushwhack 2/7/10

It was Stag Day at Owls Head. There were 5 separate parties consisting of one guy each. Lincoln Woods Trail was in good shape. Well packed and quite skiable. Barebootable too. This was only my 3rd time on skis this winter, and despite it being an upgrade on the way in, and me carrying...

North Brother Feb. 14-15 (Sunday and Monday)

I've also heard from two others in your group. I'll try to get to Neso Field early enough to start out with you guys, though I haven't pulled off an early start yet this winter. My earliest was 9:00AM, and the latest was 12:45PM! If I manage to start with you, keeping up may be another...

North Brother Feb. 14-15 (Sunday and Monday)

Reservation made for Sunday, 2/14 Today after work I called BSP and reserved a leanto for Sunday night, the 14th. I've paid for 2 people for one night, and the reservation/permit will say two people. If you'd like to join me, I think I need to call in your name by that Friday, 2/12. If...

North Brother Feb. 14-15 (Sunday and Monday)

North Brother Feb. 14-15 (Sunday and Monday) I need company for North Brother in Baxter State Park, Maine. That's a long haul, especially from northern NY State. I'm thinking of Presidents Weekend (Feb. 13-15) because it's more likely that others will have the time. Currently, my idea is to...

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

Wow! Well done Rick! I definitely would not have fared as well as you. From your details, I see my delay in buying that Adventure Medical bivy is just plain deadly foolishness. I have a shadow of an inkling of what you might have been feeling up there. I was on Moosilauke the previous day...

Moosilauke 1/14/10 Up Snapper&Carriage, down Gorge Bk. Tr.

Got a 9:00AM start, the earliest so far this winter! Blue skys, but M's summit still in clouds. That'll clear up by the time I get there! Ravine Rd. is plowed uphill for about 100 yards, to gate. Parked by 118. --All foot bridges intact. -Lots of recent wind debris: twigs, sprigs, and...

    NH48 Winter Record Attempt 1/16/10 -

Good luck on your attempt! I will not be hiking between Garfield and Galehead as I'd said earlier. Realized it's an 18 mile r/t, and am not ready for that yet. Carrigain via SRT well broken 1/11/10. Didn't see any recent tracks coming up Desolation. Tom, Field and Willey all broken as of...

    Tom, Field, and Willey 1/12/10

I hit a new low in inability to get a timely start. Left car at 12:46PM! --No water crossings on this hike, IIRC --Took Avalon and A-Z to Willey Ridge Trail Jct. This was pretty solidly tracked. Mt. Tom Spur was well tracked but blown over near the summit. At a level, summity clearing...

Carrigain via Signal Ridge Tr. 1/11/10

Sawyer River Road well packed by snowmobiles. Barebooted it. --Put on snowshoes at start of SigRT. There were fairly recent tracks, but there weren't enough previous people to make a completely uniformly stomped out track. I tried to step on what they'd missed. --First stream crossing, the...

    Cranberry Lake 50 trails update

No, not one day. The purpose of my hike was to see if I could keep hiking 24 hours or more without any sleep, a nap, or a z. For the sake of my knees, I stopped for 5 minutes every hour and literally put my legs up in the air and pedaled the air bike. The whole loop including the full road...

    Cranberry Lake 50 trails update

Hi Walt, Happy New Year! No, I wasn't planning to, but since I did just make a pulk for a snowed-cancelled trip to North Brother in Maine, I feel partially equipped for such an attempt. But my focus this winter is on the NE115, and those peaks get first priority when there's a stretch of...

Audrey, thanks for the greenie. I hoped my wordy report wouldn't be too boring, especially compared to the two reports with pictures. That's why I thoughtfully plagiarized Chris' pics. ;~)
