Paddling the Wood River - 5/20/12

Not sure that there are any monitoring sources that would help. Best bet would be to find a friendly local that could check it out. We're about 1/2 hour from the launch and there are a couple of other RI folks on VFTT that might be able to provide intel as well.

    Recent Abe/Ellen & Sugarbush Intel?

We hiked up Lower F.I.S. and Rim Run on Ellen and came down Jester and Snowball from Lincoln. More details in the full trip report (link below) Nice view!! Thanks for sharing the pic. The full trip report is posted here...

Mt Isolation - 2d attempt. Suggestions, Recomendations, Trail coinditions?

Sorry for the slow reply, but congratulations Marvin!! Glad you had such a nice day for your last one. I've gone back and read most of your blog posts from the rest of the journey and you've had quite the last couple of years. I'm sure this is just the beginning. Yup, it's definitely a lot...

If at First You Don't Succeed... - Mt Abraham and Ellen 3/9/13

Yes you must Kevin! Just let us know when you're ready - we're ready to go back with you. Thanks Donna. Yes, the snowshoes and poles were sitting right where we'd left them next to the car when we got back. Not sure how none of us saw them either Friday night or Saturday morning. :confused...

The End of Vermont? - Killington Peak 3/10/13

Thanks Matt. I had to laugh when I read your comment - I hadn't actually thought of that potential interpretation of the title. The only glimpse of the ski area was what we saw walking across the summit so I'm not sure how to personally compare it. I generally don't like mountains with ski...

The End of Vermont? - Killington Peak 3/10/13

After an amazing day on Abe and Ellen last Saturday we followed it up with an equally beautiful day for Killington on Sunday. I'm really glad that we decided to bag our last couple of hikes and come back for a better day. These were definitely the better days! The hike up was great and the...

If at First You Don't Succeed... - Mt Abraham and Ellen 3/9/13

In January we turned around almost before we started on Abe and Ellen on a very inhospitable day. Last weekend we went back to Vermont to finish what we started. What a difference! Saturday was one of the most beautiful winter days we've ever spent in the mountains and a bunch of potential...

    Recent Abe/Ellen & Sugarbush Intel?

Just coming back to close off this thread. Everything went perfectly this weekend. The weather was as good as it possibly gets in winter. We got to the trailhead at 7am and had the place to ourselves (lifts open at 9). We met 4 ski patrol members on the way up. Each stopped and talked to us...

A Bluebird Day for 1st Hike on Presi Ridge- Ike & Pierce bagged

This is definitely an example of being in the right place at the right time Chris! Awesome!! The trip report is great and the pictures are BEAUTIFUL! The southern Presi's are at the top of my list on any day. After this one I have no doubt that you'll be back...

    Recent Abe/Ellen & Sugarbush Intel?

OK, looks like we're all set! Nat talked to the head of the ski patrol at Sugarbush and we got permission to use the ski trails. She said he was very nice and appreciate our asking. His suggestion was to start as early as possible and get up high before too many skiiers are out. Recommended...

Mt Isolation - 2d attempt. Suggestions, Recomendations, Trail coinditions?

48? Better yet!! Perfect day and perfect place to finish! I agree with Laura - head up Friday night and get an early start. I hadn't noticed that you're from RI. I feel your pain with the single day drive up/back and hike thing. We've done it a lot, but I definitely wouldn't want to do it...

    Recent Abe/Ellen & Sugarbush Intel?

Thanks Bryan and Tom. Seems like every account of the Monroe Skyline in winter that I've seen has been filled with descriptions of "interesting" route finding. I've got the GPS and track log, so hopefully that helps. Then there are the spruce traps  Hopefully we avoid those My wife...

Mt Isolation - 2d attempt. Suggestions, Recomendations, Trail coinditions?

It was sure broken out well the previous Tuesday when we did it. I know that there was significant snow the next few days after that, but the base was really solid and I'm sure the new stuff should be well packed out from last weekend. I'm also sure that with the got forecast this weekend that...

    Recent Abe/Ellen & Sugarbush Intel?

We're heading back to Vermont this weekend to try to finish what we missed in our January trip. I'm wondering if anyone has any recent intel on trail conditions for Abe/Ellen (AT on the ridge and Battell in particular) and on the current hiking policy at Sugarbush. Last time I talked to...

    Return to Isolation - 2/26/13

Thanks Chris. We definitely managed to hit the right day for this one in many ways. It was awesome out there. And well he should be! I think it's so great to see people out teaching their kids to love the outdoors. Winter camping and hiking the 4000 footers is going above and beyond (so to...

    Return to Isolation - 2/26/13

After enjoying Mt Isolation so much last summer we knew we had to get back up there in winter. After three great days of hiking since Saturday on our February vacation in the Whites, Tuesday provided the perfect opportunity. Trails were packed after the weekend snow and weather conditions were...

Trail condition predictions for Isolation this coming friday (2/22/13) or weekend

We did Isolation yesterday and met the mirabela family out there on their way down from the summit (nice to meet you guys!). As of yesterday everything was a beautiful snowshoe highway! Rocky Branch, EH bushwhack (which starts about 150' past the normal "marked" intersection, Isolation and...

Mt Mansfield With Only a Few Profanities - 1/19/13

Jay hit it exactly. This is a short route - under 5 miles round trip including the road walk. Elevation gain is around 2700' but the only place it feels like it is on Profanity. We didn't need anything besides snowshoes, but I can definitely see the need for crampons on a different day.

Staying Semi Thawed on Moosilauke 2/18/13

When you pick a classic winter day, you don't mess around! Just gorgeous!! That first shot of the sky through the trees is amazing. Impossibly blue is a perfect description. The walk through the frosted trees along the summit ridge looks magical. I think one or two days something likes this...
