Hey, Somebody Get This Owl Off My Back! - Owl's Head - 5-12-12

I've been dreading this hike since the day that we decided that we were going to finish the 48 (and for a while it was the reason that I knew we'd never finish). Once again, the mountains hold great surprises. What a fantastic day we had! Great people to hike with, a bit of every condition...

Geneva puts the final pin in her map, Owls Head on 5/12!

Congratulations to Geneva! She was the star of the day for sure and we're so glad that we got to share her finish with her (and a fun hike with such a great group) to finally knock Owl's Head off our list. I'll be posting my trip report shortly with a ton of pictures of the new 48 finisher...

    2012 Spring Wildflower Thread

We decided to venture out locally (in Rhode Island) to a new spot we'd been meaning to visit since it opened a couple of years ago - Tillinghast Pond Management Area in West Greenwich. I was hoping to find a few spring flowers but was totally unprepared for the amazing show we found! So great...

Has anyone else read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed?

Just ran into the book on the front table at the Harvard Coop when we were there for Trish and Alex's book signing for UP on Tuesday night. All I had to do was read the first page to be hooked. Picked up the Kindle copy when we got home (along with the signed print and Kindle editions of UP)...

    Tuckerman Ravine trip 3/24/12

Great photos Phil! Unfortunately I only saw the first few since I got to the one of the bacon and couldn't make myself scroll down any further. Seriously - what a great day in Tux. Every year we say we're going to get in a watch the spring skiers. Looks like we're not going to...

PeakFinder App for iPhone and Android

Yes, it puts you at ground level based on the elevation of the lat/long you're at. Pretty much all it can do until smartphones start building in altimeters. Based on this it can't tell you what you can see from the top of a fire tower on the summit (and also what you can't see based on being...

PeakFinder App for iPhone and Android

They use a combination of usgs.gov data for the elevation models and openstreetmap.org and geonames.org for the peak names. I've tried the app in a number of spots in the Whites as well as originally in Utah. Every place that I've tried (which haven't been out of the way) have worked very...

Spring Skiing in Tuckerman Ravine ?

Was probably the guys we talked to in the parking lot. Amazing! Did a quick search and found a bunch of other old trip reports with even crazier photos. One actually talked about skiing from the summit of Adams all the way to the parking lot in Appalachia (on the hiking trails). Yikes!

Spring Skiing in Tuckerman Ravine ?

While we were waiting in the parking lot at Appalachia on Saturday there were a bunch of people coming out of woods carrying skis. I asked one of the groups if they'd actually had a chance to use them and the response was "hell yes! - the headwall on King Ravine is awesome!". I saw...

Madison to Monroe on 3-17-12 for 2 W48 finishes

Congratulations again to you, Hui Yeng and Mike! What an incredible day (and weekend) you guys had. When you told me the story all I could do was shake my head. Were there any possible conditions that you didn't run into? Reading the account now it's even more amazing. Tackling all the...

Adams, Madison, and a Snowman at the Hut, 3/17/2012

Great account of the day Earl and beautiful pictures to go with it. Great that you and Sue could be there to support the finishers and celebrate with the gang. We were with the group celebrating with Kevin at the bottom and didn't realize that it was you until you were driving out of the...

PeakFinder App for iPhone and Android

Glad to see you posted this here Karl. As I said in my comment on the blog, I grabbed this app when I was in Utah in January and wanted some idea of what I was looking at. It worked quite well so when I got back home I grabbed the Eastern version (there are two apps that cover the whole US)...
