    In Praise of Wool

Wool still has its place I still love wool too! While most of my winter hiking clothing these days are synthetic, I would have no problem going back to the older wool clothing that sits in the closet. Still use ragg wool and Dachstein boiled wool mitts, though. The huge advantage that wool...

Mt Carrigan -Skimom & Arm finish lists!

Well done! Congratulations to Skimom and ARM for completing their lists in grand style! Certainly, Carrigain proved to be one of the 2 or 3 most difficult hikes that I've been on. It was great to share the day with so many new faces, many of whom are regular VFTT posters. Believe MEB was the...

    Labrador and Newfoundland

Sounds like you have a good vehicle for a drive on the Labrador/Quebec dirt roads. If you go that route, carrying some extra gasoline might be a reasonable thing to do. If a bridge were to get washed out (it happens), particularly on that Lab City to Goose Bay section, you could be looking at...

    Labrador and Newfoundland

Don't forget the Labrador Interior Dalraida, not positive, but it sounds like you may be planning to drive from Baie Comeau, Quebec to Goose Bay/Happy Valley, Labrador (may still be the only way to drive there, short of taking a ferry). If so, you may want to check on the current condition of...

Alpine Ski Areas in MA for a novice

Got Skis Bought a pair of the Fischer E99 (older more traditional touring version) at Hilton's Tent City, so I'm now available for some skiing. Mark_151: Thanks for the comments on the Teleboards Demo dates. At some point, would probably like to demo some skis up at Wachusett with more...

Alpine Ski Areas in MA for a novice

DougPaul: Thanks for mentioning the similarities between alpine and BC skiing. If its possible to do hockey stops using the Excursions with skinny skis (without advanced skills) in other than perfect conditions, that will exceed my wildest expectations. Mark: Thanks for the info about the...

Alpine Ski Areas in MA for a novice

I'm stoked for some free-heel skiing at Wachusett as well. The only catch is that I don't own BC skis yet. After a fair bit of research, I was finally able to find a pair of Garmont Excursion boots earlier this week. As soon as I can find a quality waxable pair of what Pinnah call's Traditional...

Starr King and Waumbek - Saturday, 1/22

Super job with the TR, Dr. Wu. I'm also impressed with the quantity of quality pictures that you got! Also, it was great to meet everyone for the first time. Let's do it again sometime. Take care, Marshall

    Waumbek / Starr King / Weeks - Saturday 1/22/05

Just want to jump in here and mention that I'm still very much looking forward to the hike. Still am more interested in an out and back hike to Waumbek and possibly beyond. Might prove to be an interesting day with the cold in the mountains and the forecasted snowstorm for the drive home! I...

    Waumbek / Starr King / Weeks - Saturday 1/22/05

Sounds like things are coming together An 8:00 start time sounds great. Looking forward to hiking with you folks on Saturday. Might substitute the hand-warmers for the swim trunks for this one... MaryEllen: I agree with Dr. Wu that you likely won't have a problem finding someone to hike back...

    Waumbek / Starr King / Weeks - Saturday 1/22/05

How about another addition? Any room on the roster for another hiker? I'm interested in doing an out and back type of hike as well. Would like to get Waumbek and maybe South Weeks as well, depending on how we are doing. Marshall

    Glissading Thingies

I use one of those $5 HDPE plastic roll-up sleds that you often see at the local hardware store. Mine is about 18 x 36 inches with 2 rectangular slots on the front for hand holds. It is very light and weighs perhaps only slightly more than a lexan water bottle (liter size). When rolled up, it...

BANFF Film Festival - Wed Feb 25, Who's GOING?

To those without a ticket, there may be hope yet! I went to the Worcester showing on Sunday evening with a friend and neither of us had tickets. The Banff Film Festival was sold out but there were no-shows and we were lucky to get high on the wait list and ultimately got into the theater. I...

    Upgrade Tubbs' crampons?

CaptCaper, I probably need to get beyond the "If it ain't broken…" mentality. However, short of stepping into and having to work out of a nasty spruce trap, I can't remember the last time that the fastex buckle bindings on my Sierra's had any kind of binding failure.

    Upgrade Tubbs' crampons?

Thanks Kevin, much appreciated. The 25 inch model looks pretty good. Not really familiar with the bindings on those shoes, but I've had great luck with the older fastex buckle type bindings so would probably opt to go that route.

    Upgrade Tubbs' crampons?

I upgraded my Tubbs Sierras to the stainless steel Vipers crampons last year for about $30. Really easy to install and you'll notice a big difference on the trail. After initially calling, received the Vipers in less than one week's time. Was really surprised when a second set showed up a few...
