    Catskill Conditions

Catskill Conditions and the Batavia Kill Back in February the conditions in the Catskills were icy. I know February wasn't that long ago but the temperatures in Hunter next week are supposed to be up in the 50s. Looking to do the Blackhead Range in two weeks. Have things changed at all...

    Mt. Washington Road Race jitters

That's awesome! Why else race, right?!?! ;) How long is the race up Whiteface/when is it? Speaking of steps...the Stony Brook Chemistry Building here on Long Island has 8 stories. One time I measured the height of each story to be 15 feet (bigger than your normal household ceiling height of...

Hydrofracking for natural gas in Catskills

Major problems in Cooperstown!!! Just read in the Yankee Brew News that the hydrofracking in NYS might affect the ground water being used by Brewery Ommegang to brew their Belgian style beers!!! This could lead to Ommegeddon!!! Time to make a stand people!!!

    Mt. Washington Road Race jitters

Good luck! Train hard! The stairs are a great idea. If you can find a tall building near you (hospital, college, office building) that would be great. Something with a stair well of 5 to 10 flights for continuous effort. Up and down, up and down, up and down...great preparation for...

3 rescues in High Peaks over weekend

Good point. People should have more common sense than that, we should hope. (Sorry...don't know how to multiple quote in the same post :o)

3 rescues in High Peaks over weekend

Hopefuly people don't fall back (no punn intended) on cell phones as an "Oh...I'll just call the DEC if there's an emergency and they'll come rescue me" resource.

    Dulfersitz

Thanks guys...had a lot of fun with it. And thanks for the pointers Doug...well taken. I made sure to bring my leather gloves in the event I used the Dulfersitz. They were much better than my normal winter snow gloves. With this Muenter Hitch though...is one able to retrieve their gear after...

    Dulfersitz

Well, the Dulfersitz is definitely a good technique to have up your sleeve. I ventured up Sugarloaf in the Catskills on Tuesday. Going up the Mink Hollow side of Sugarloaf was exciting but fortunately uneventful! Just about every step of the ascent was covered in ice. Saw a lot of...

    Dulfersitz

Anyone use this rappelling method to get through some of the steeper, down-hill, icier sections in the mountains this winter? With good rope, crampons and a helmet, it sounds do-able.

    Bushwacking Sugarloaf (Catskills)

OK, thanks Jay...will look. Not a member there. I get the feeling from google satellite that the ridge and peak is covered in balsams. Ouch.

    Bushwacking Sugarloaf (Catskills)

Anyone ever bushwack Sugarloaf from the North, Northeast? Basically straight into the woods at the end of the Roaring Kill Trail. Looking to avoid Mink Hollow and Pecoy Notch. Hear the Devil's Path is quite icy. I know it's all icy but at least this bushwack seems to be along less-steep grades...

    Food...and maybe a pint

Hey, Will be looking for some good food (foremost) and possibly a good pint in the Malta/Cambridge/Saratoga area in April...weekend of the Tour of the Battenkill. Does anyone have any ideas? Preferences: 1 - German/Swiss (am I pushing my luck here?) 2 - Good Burgers/American Pub fare 3 -...

    Geology of Mt. Washington

HAHAHA Thanks --M. Was feeling neglected there for a while ;) Very interesting. I know the type of terrain you're talking about. It can be taxing if hiking on that stuff for long periods. Experienced a huge "rock pile" on my way up Longs Peak in Colorado a few years ago. As far as the eye...

    Great Yoga Book for Hikers

Yoga is great! Thanks for the suggestion. Is there a difference between Hatha and Bikram's? I've taken some Bikram classes and have a Bikram home video. If stretching before a hike (especially after a long ride in the car), it might be best to hike on the trail a little to warm up first...

Don't get to Mt. Washington too often...what is meant by "the Rock Pile?" Is that a noticeable feature on the slopes somewhere? Thanks
