    More on packable down jackets

If you're anywhere near Littleton I bought a Patagonia down sweater for 50% off at the Summit Shop in Littleton. Apparently they move any leftovers with discontinued colors upstairs to the bargain area. Great deal, $100 vs. $200 and this jacket is super packable and quite warm.

Thanks to all for a great day, had a blast. Loved how well Zoe and Terra got along, like they had been hiking together for ever. Anyway, hope to see you all on the trail again soon. Big ups to Bob and Jerry for the after party, exceptional hosts!!!

Looking for a little "Boot Help"

I think the best boot buying advice I ever recieved was don't do a lot of research and go to the store zeroed in on a particular brand. Try them all on and go with what fits your foot best. I have found huge variation in the lasts used by different conpanies, some 9s felt great, others felt...

Backpacks, how many is too many?

I am a self acknowledged gear ****, I'm actually kind of proud of that label. I own 8 packs but really only use three, one a 70 liter Osprey for multi-night trips, a 50 liter Black Diamond for winter day and summer over nights and a 30 liter BD for summer days and skiing. The other five tend to...

    NH Campsite Tax

I hate to see any taxes or fees go up but, NH does more with less than any other state I'm aware of so I won't lose any sleep over this.

We had to put Genie down today

Everyone deserves one great dog in their lifetime. Although I never met Genie it seems she may have been yours. I know how you must be feeling, they are family with four legs. My deepest sympathy.

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

I think the funiest piece of unsolicited advice I ever received was from a group of Boy Scouts heading up Lafayette from Greenleaf. It was mid May, I'm quite certain it was the weekend the hut opened, and I had just completed traversing the ridge from Falling Waters. It was nasty up high; about...

A Different Kind of Big Mountain Experience

Great trip report, looks like you had primo conditions. The fresh pow is intoxicating. Keep a weather eye out for a dangerous condition that sometimes follow one's first trip out west. Its called "hardpackitis" and its serious. After my first trip to ALTA I had no interest in sking the usual...

    Musings about the Highland center

OK; the AMC isn't perfect (God Knows), and certainly I have been no friend to this organization. And I grant them the need to generate enough revenue to survive as a business. There business model requires a constant stream of fresh new faces experiencing the whites and wanting to help ($$). I...

Lunch anyone? What to eat on a winter day hike

I've been taking a little diferent approach to winter hiking lunches. I carry two thermoses (or is it thermi ?) SP. One with hot tea and one with hot soup. I stuff a down jacket and sit down out of the wind on a Z-rest in my down jacket and enjoy a civilized lunch. To each his own but this is...
