    Musings about the Highland center

I agree with Maddy. Ever since the HC was erected I just don't feel the same way about the AMC. In my mind, Pinkham will always be what AMC should be about. I understand the need for all non-profits to create a sustainable revenue stream, and the fact remains that those who choose to pay the...

    Bondcliff. Only Bondcliff. 01/25/09

When I see that picture of Steve-O with face mask and goggles, all I can think of is : "I can't see I can't see" "Whats the matter kid? " "I got my eyes closed" Great trip report!!!!

    after-hike hang-outs in the Whites

I really like CJ's Penalty Box in Lincoln (basement of the Kanc Motor Lodge). Great pub food, reasonable draft beer selection, and a very locally flavored crowd. One warning; don't tick off the bartender, you could die of thirst.

Outdoors "bucket list" (places to be sure to see)

There are just too many, so I'll limit this to New England: 1. The less traveled areas of Baxter State Park; Davis Pond, South Branch Pond, The Travelers. 2. The Bold Coast Trail in Cutler, Maine. 3. Acadia National Park in winter. I could go on and on but these are the top of the heap for me!!

    Hiking with dogs - Question

Bag Balm is available at both Shaws and Stop and Shop. The last jar I purchased was at Zeb's in North Conway. There is another product available similar to Bag Balm called Musher's Wax. Google it, its sold by many online retailers. Works but is pricey. One other thing you can do is keep the hair...

    Hiking with dogs - Question

I have done a fair amount of hiking with my two springers. One hard learned lesson; my 13 year old, now retired from hiking, developed frostbite on her paw pads. Just a dumb mistake on my part. I have since started applying Bag Balm quite liberally to their paws for any extended winter walks. It...

    Appropriate hiking gear for Thanksgiving?

I did the Jackson/Webster loop this past Saturday. Snow depths ranged from 3-10 inches. No need for snow shoes yet but there was plenty of ice. I had microspikes on from door to door. Hope this helps.

    Driving to Baxter question

Both Rt. 150 and 11 decent, but be careful of the logging trucks. They are under the mistaken impression that they own these roads. If I were you, I would make my way over to Auburn Maine and head north on the turnpike from there. OBTW: I'm at BSP from 10/2-5 @ Kidney. Any idea what you're...

    INS roadblocks

I've been through these raod blocks many times and on all but one occasion have been simply waived through. They are definately profiling a particular type of vehicle from specific locations. I spoke with a Border Patrol officer in Lincoln. He was open about the fact that Route 93 has become a...

    a good cup o' joe

I've been using the coffee kit that Jetboil makes for there personal cooking system. Use a good Kona grind and the coffee is pretty good. It is essentially a French Press and I've had good results with it. Give it a try, I think the kit is $20.

Getting to the Trailhead; My MPG experiment !!

With the prospect of $5 per gallon gas looming, I'm looking for any edge I can get get to reduce my transportation costs to my hiking destinations. So I decided to try a very un-scientific analysis of how highway speed affects fuel economy. Now I know this is pretty basic and probubly well known...

    Coolest Place You've Ever Slept?

Moose wrestling!! The leanto at Davis Pond in BSP. In the middle of the night the sound of crashing trees woke me up. I focused my headlight at the clearing in front of the leanto and two bull moose were locked up in full combat. Equally awesome and frightening!!

    Edmands Path

Not the most current info but, I was up Edmonds two weeks ago. Dry and clear to the stone gate (around 3500') and then the snow started. The drifting was quite deep in places with the typical monorail. Snow was well consolidated, I didn't use snowshoes but microspikes came in very handy...

Rocky Branch Trail from Rt. 16, May 22

More likely the "Moose Whisperer". I'm in awe of your ability to get so close to these beautiful creatures and have them feel so comfortable with you. Any theories on your part? Or is it that you are very much on their turf and not seeing them on the side of some highway where they are on high...

Eisenhower via Edmonds and Crawford Paths

All in all, an incredible day to be above tree line. Sunny, warm and very little wind. Edmonds was dry and free of snow to about 3200'. However, the blowdowns are plentiful and large. A lot of trail clearing work is ahead. Just below the stone gate the snow started in earnest. Snowshoes not...

    Bugs in Maine

Timing is everything!! Having spent a fair amount of time is both places during bug season, first thing I would say is that the flies are far worse in Western Maine than the whites. I know its a very general comment but thats just my experience. In fact, the area encompassing Sunday River up...

    Endangered Hemlocks

Bad Bug!!! I had a row of beautiful hemlocks in my backyard in RI. Three years ago they started to look somewhat un-healty and partially defoliated. Wooly adelgid. Had them sprayed four times, no luck. The chain saw came out this winter. In my lifetime I've seen these Hemlock eating beasts...
