    Flat Mountain Pond, August 18

Beautiful! You have a way with the lens. What "shutter speed" did you use to smear the water?

    I did Owl's Head because...

Haven't been up there in twelve years, but I'm dying to visit the "new" high point, as I'm sure it's vastly different than what was previously thought to be the "peak."

    East Royce Overnight 8/18-19/07

WOW What dramatic pictures! Were this still the film age, you'd have run out of Kodachrome!!

Carrigain and the Captain, pt. II

(continued from pt. 1, an earlier post) Erin and I left the Carrigain tower around 8:30 and followed paths west through Carrigain's little camping area. Then I charged ahead, beginning our bushwhack through enjoyable open woods. After a quarter mile or so, having dropped down 400 feet, we...

    Carrigain and whacking the Captain

Every August my daughter and I meet up for a climb - usually in the Adirondacks, but this year we chose the White Mountains. She needed 4680' Carrigain for the NH 4k list, and I needed the 3540' Captain for the NH Hundred Highest. The plan was to haul our overnight packs up Carrigain Saturday...

Nelson Crag on Sunday the 19th

My daughter Erin and I hiked up Carrigain Saturday and overnighted at the old firewarden's cabin site. We were thankful for our zero degree bags! In the morning she wouldn't leave the tent. I had to pass her hot coffee through the flap. I finally got her out at 8:30. We went up to the...

    Saddleback (KI,ME) 2998?

Could it be that "the other" Saddleback will edge its way on to the NE 3k list??! After all, it has a canister now, and Jim's altimeter reading of way more than 3k.... Can't wait to get up there and see if my Casio altimeter and GPS altimeter agree.

    Pilot Range 8/11/07

There's a MOWED path that extends up & east from behind the Sloat house, leading to a trail, if you want to ascend from the west. But the woods aren't bad on the east side if you prefer whack' up from the end of Millbrook Road....

Owl's Head cairns and signs removed

Let 'em take the signs, the jars, and the canisters, kick down the cairns, confiscate the flagging and obliterate the blazes, if it makes 'em happy. If they start taking down the mountains, that would be cause for alarm.

    Wildcats and the Mountaineer 8/4/2007

Congratulations on finishing and, better yet, writing such a moving report. How long will you bask in the afterglow of accomplishment before you settle on your next objective? Maine and Vermont are calling... just 19 4k's to complete the next list.... jt

Owl's Head cairns and signs removed

Al - You seem to encounter officialdom on unofficial paths with alarming regularity. Are you as lucky on the roads, attracting Crown Vics with blue lights??!

    Whitecap (3644') and Hay (ME)

I have plans for White Cap this fall... one of the remaining few I need to complete the Northeast 2k prominence and New England finest fifty lists. Thanks for the heads-up on the road approach from KI. Having already torn up my car's undercarriage in Northern New Hampshire earlier this year...

Calamity on Calamity (Long) - 8/2/07

Tim - From your hundreds of excellent posts, trip reports and otherwise through the years, this one tops 'em all. Those of us reading were right there with you. Especially poignant is the bittersweet feeling of savoring the adventure with Nick, knowing there aren't that many left. This account...

the Bemis tower "jar" is white pvc attached to a tree just a few feet from the tower wreckage. At least it was there last December.

What idiot would do Zealand as his 48th?

Glad to see you came around, Bob! Congratulations! But seeing the look on your mug, I gotta ask... Is that a smug look showing a sense of accomplishment on finishing or a bemused smile showing your sense of humor regarding your attaining that last, mighty peak? Anyway, now you can call yourself...

    Savage Mt. NHHH

A little more than halfway up the logging road that heads west toward the Savage/Spruce Mt. col from Stratford Bog Pond there's a very serious gate surrounded by countless "posted/No trespassing" signs. Although this appears to be directed toward the ATV crowd, the numerous "posted" signs...

    Vermont Five-Pack (July 23-25)

Great idea to bag those Vermonters the way you did! Me, I burned appalling amounts of gasoline going from the seacoast to Vermont and back too many times. Coulda spent the gas money on lodging and sent the wife off shopping in all those toney joints in Manchester. Oh well. Excellent trip...

    Peak Above the Nubble

Bill - As for the slides on PAtN, you don't want to take the checkmark slide. It's suicide... slicker than 10 W 40. If you take a slide route up, take the one on PAtN's northwest side, actually a rocky, enlarged creek channel. Albee's directions are correct. After nearly killing myself on the...

Canister for "West West" Scar Ridge

Albee - Too bad you missed the Adirondack canisters. You could spend half the day reading the entries in those things. My only lament is that I missed the Allen can... that was my number 45 and they'd decided to rip down the canisters before I made it up there.

Canister for "West West" Scar Ridge

I didn't run the idea of placing a west-west canister by the committee per se, but talked to Steve Smith about it... he didn't seem to think there'd be a problem. Granted, it's only an "unsanctioned" canister, but feel free to sign in....
