    2011 spring wildflower thread

From Mt. Adams yesterday, 6-20-11: More Mountain Heath Pale Laurel? There was a large patch of these, several hundred square feet.

    2011 spring wildflower thread

We climbed Ike and Pierce yesterday, based on Griffin's encouraging trail report (thanks!). Alpine flowers were beginning to bloom on Eisenhower and were at around 80% on the peak's south slopes. Diapensia, Lapland Rosebay and Alpine Azalea were lovely and will be near peak there this weekend...

Quebec City: hiking and other things to do

If time allows, drive north along the St. Lawrence. Wonderful hiking in the Sanguenay region and many other spots along the way. It's a beautiful drive, too. Hiking around Mount-Sainte-Anne is nice, as well, and nearby. You will shake your head at Montmorency Falls, for the contrast of their...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Great thread and photos, despite generally lousy weather conditions! Such as Sunday... Rose Twisted-Stalk, Mt. Sunapee, 5-22-11.

    Best Hikes in the US!

Great work! I would add Mt. Wrightson in southern Arizona. Desert to alpine zones on wonderful trails.

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Some nice finds and photography, so far! Common but always, to me, otherworldly Jack-in-the-pulpit. Legacy Park, Bedford, May 5, 2011.

Ed Webster's book Snow in the Kingdom

Ed spent several weekends in the lobby of the Kittery Trading Post last year promoting this remarkable book. He is as humble and personable as the book's tenor would suggest. Ed Webster's rock climbing guides are almost readable as stories, with his senses of humor and history so interwoven in them.

Black Snout, Shaw, Turtleback and Bald Knob, 4-22-11

We ascended the Mt. Shaw Trail and took the usual carriage roads/trails down to Turtleback and Bald Knob, finally descending the Bald Knob Trail. Very little snow below 2400' but stretches of deep snow, thankfully firm today, on the carriage roads up high. Minor ice and snow on the Turtleback...

    Belknap Mountain Range question

Most of the dotted red trails on the map are very difficult to follow or are overgrown entirely. Even a bushwhack on its rough course would bear the risk of crossing the Blue Trail without seeing it, as it, too, was sparsely marked last fall. A safer plan would be to climb Straightback Mt. from...

Bald Knob Trail No Trespassing Signs

I walked east on Rte. 171 from the signs and the one to the right of the driveway is the easternmost sign. The signs do continue along the road west of the driveway so I conclude that the posting owner's land ends at the right margin of the driveway, at or near the town line. There is an...

Cannon from Tram lot, KRT, 4-15-11

Kinsman Ridge Trail had hard snow, and lots of it, from bottom to top. Today the surface was firm but it softened a bit on our descent, making for occasional post holes if one stepped off the rail. Section in the skiing glades had icy spots where traction was essential. No blowdowns. We carried...

Bald Knob Trail No Trespassing Signs

Actually, it's steep and rocky but eroded in only a couple of sections, no worse than many Whites trails, and, otherwise, has been well maintained for the last few years. I don't think the signs have anything to do with the trail's condition as they mark the eastern end of a stretch of frontage...

Bald Knob Trail No Trespassing Signs

Today, as I drove past the Bald Knob Trail trailhead in the Ossipees (Rte. 171), I noticed some new "No Trespassing" signs, new at least since my last hike there last fall. In the past, signs apparently were not meant to apply to hikers but these appear to mean business. Anyone have any info on...

Piper, Belknap and Gunstock Mts. from Carriage Road gate, 3-28-11

We ascended Piper Mt. by the Piper Trail, traversed the ridge and descended by the Gunstock Mt. Trail, a nice 5 mile loop. All trails were well-packed with good snow cover. No blowdowns. One crossing at beginning of Piper Trail had ice-covered rocks but wasn't bad. We wore Microspike ST's for...

Waumbek by Starr King Trail, 3-25-11

Trail had a packed surface with occasional postholes under several inches of new snow, some of it drifted between Starr King and Waumbek. No significant blowdowns. We wore snowshoes all day, perfect conditions. Off trail, in the open woods, the crust supported snowshoe travel anywhere and we...

Garmin Forerunner Series and Whites Coverage

The "good" news is that Garmin's accessories are generally poorly designed, anyway. The bike mount (requiring a triathlon wristband) for the 205 was so flimsy that I made my own. Most of the accessories, though, are available on eBay.
