Garfield by Garfield Trail, GRT, 2-12-10

We parked at the southern outlet of the Gale River Road which was plowed for parking. The 1.3 mile road walk had the worst footing of the day with a hard, irregular surface beneath some powder for its length. River crossings where the bridges are washed out require care as they are not solidly...

Cannon from tram lot by Kinsman Ridge Trail, 2-11-10

Trail was well-packed with some drifting to a foot or so of powder in the uppermost section. There were a few icy spots in the open glade skiing area, not bad. No blowdowns and no crossings. We wore Microspike ST's car-to-car. Snowshoes might have been helpful in the drifts but weren't...

Tecumseh from ski area, Mt. Tecumseh Trail & Upper Sosman, 2-9-10

Trails were hard packed with a dusting of powder up to the top of the upper stairmaster section then a few drifts, up to a foot, in the usual spots on the ridge. Crossings were solid, no blowdowns. I wore Microspike ST's car-to-car, mainly for efficiency. Drifted areas were light powder and 50'...

    Your road bike.

Litespeed Tuscany and Seven Odonata are my go-to road bikes. I have a couple of steelies, too, including a 'Nag MXL, but find titanium's ride characteristics to be ideal for my (not everyone's!) needs. But I agree with others here that CX bikes are great as all-around rides. I have a beat-up...

Snowshoe Racing - shortcut to superfitness?

Friend and hiking partner, Gary, almost 71, participates in these (with Dions) every weekend. He says they're a blast. Of course, he wins his age category every time but is competitive in the lower ones as well.

    Monadnock Question

It's been partially plowed when I've used it in the winter the last few years. Hopefully, some one with up-to-date info will chime in. I agree about the trails leaving from there. White Arrow with its upper, open formations is spectacular in the winter.

skiboards, snowblades, super short skis ?

I've got a pair of Figl's (leftmost in link photo) I'll sell you dirt cheap. Bindings are like step-in crampon bindings and work with plastic mountaineering boots. Fun on open slopes, less so on hiking trails.. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Verschiedene_Firngleiter-_%28Figl-%29_Modelle.JPG

Mt. Sunapee by Andrews Brook Trail 1-27-10

Overall, trail was well-packed and in good shape. Crossings were a bit tricky with high water and uplifted ice and snow from the earlier torrent. A couple of blowdowns; wish we'd brought saws. Microspike ST's were perfect for the conditions. Good to have Mike back on the trail after knee...

Fitness for Training Old Farts 55+

I'm 64 and train only by doing things I enjoy. In winter, hike and xc/bc ski and will try to fit a walk in when I can't do these. In other seasons, hike, bike, skate and sea kayak.

Franconia Ridge (Flume to Lafayette) in Winter Q

Glad to hear you're still out there. And doing big hikes! Bummer we missed you; couldn't have been by more than an hour.

    GPS track question

Well, thanks, guys. Doug is right, you have to ask the right question. I really wanted to know (and still do) if the wildly inaccurate track in my map capture is within the norm in the performance of the eTrex Legend, in forumites' experience.

No, Remix, I think you misunderstood me. If you are referring to my "ask the right person"...

No, Remix, I think you misunderstood me. If you are referring to my "ask the right person" comment, I was just digging Doug back for his "ask the right question" dig. I respect your (and Doug's) inputs. Truly sorry if I offended you in any way, not at all my intention or style. Happy trails (or...

    GPS track question

No, Remix, your inputs have been helpful and I want to hear them. This forum clearly needs more than one GPS expert. But the 76CSx that I've been using for a couple of years definitely does not exhibit the wild tracks that I posted above. I posted because the erroneous tracks/points make...

    GPS track question

While I'm frustrated with many things relating to Garmin products, the results above are from an early generation device and, as Doug has made clear, the newer, high-end Garmins are unlikely to yield the wildly inaccurate tracks depicted due to their improved sensitivity. So, as I feared, this...

    GPS track question

I know how to analyze the tracks/data and I use the tools you mention. My question was focused more on how such wildly inaccurate points get recorded. They are far outside an explanation of the connecting of dots or an algorithm projecting a likely track. I almost always get a continuous...

Franconia Ridge (Flume to Lafayette) in Winter Q

According to some people we met yesterday doing Liberty and Flume, they encountered two people doing your hike later in the day, north to south.

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

Giving up my search for the route wasn't easy but after almost two hours and so many passes, the last few in the spruce, I had run out of tricks. The wind was picking up, if anything, and there was nothing to lead me to believe that conditions would change before sunset. I do second guess not...
